Job Summary

The Ministry of Forests delivers holistic resource management services for British Columbians and manages specified Crown land and resources in a manner that embraces the economic, environmental and social goals of government. These results are all essential to improving the global competitiveness of BC industry and our ability to attract private investment and to stimulate economic growth and job creation across the province.


The Great Bear Rainforest Research Officer works with scientists of the Coast Area Research team, in close collaboration with co-investigators at the Nanwakolas Council Society to prioritize, plan, design, and implement the interdisciplinary Coastal Experimental Watersheds (CEWs) project (as part of the GBR Research Forest) and related research and monitoring for informing Ecosystem-based Management (EBM). The GBR Research Officer participates in field and office activities to (1) develop and verify methodologies for site selection for experimental studies, (2) refine methodologies and initiate collection of pre/post-treatment data for several natural resource values (e.g., forests, hydrology, wildlife) to quantify baseline ecological function and multiscale response to land management and climate change; and, (3) document and provide extension for CEWs research at operational and scientific conferences, and through online and published media.


This position provides senior professional advisory services to a program area (Coast Research) in the natural resource sector.

Job Requirements


  • Knowledge of research principles and experimental design
  • Candidates with experience organizing and manipulating large databases may be preferred
  • Degree in a biophysical natural resource field, e.g., forestry, biology, forest ecology, geomorphology, hydrology, or related. MSc. preferred. B.Sc. with more years of experience may be considered.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of multidisciplinary issues involved in natural resource management
  • Current software familiarity including Excel, Word, PowerPoint; candidates with some experience with MS Access may be preferred
  • Experience in negotiating/mediating solutions in natural resource management
  • Experience implementing research field experiments at multiple scales
  • Knowledge of theory and ability to conduct univariate, multivariate, and spatial ecological statistical analysis with current statistical software
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS mapping and spatial manipulation


Provisos /Willingness Statement(s)


  • Valid B.C. driver's licence.
  • Conduct field work which may include travel to remote areas by vehicle, boat, air or foot, overnight or extended stay in rough camp conditions and outdoor work in all weather conditions.
  • Meet safety standards of Work Safe BC.
  • In possession of or willing to obtain Level 1 First Aid certification
  • Terrestrial and aquatic field experience including navigation, site assessment, field surveys, and field data collection e.g., could include forest mensuration, plant surveys, stream surveys, species surveys across taxa.
