Our client is a longstanding Ontario-based multi-disciplinary design and planning firm, which includes land use planning, urban design, landscape architecture, and architecture services. They work on a variety of private and public projects, mostly across Ontario. Senior Urban Designer
Our Client is seeking a Senior Urban Designer who will thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment to help support the Partnership team. Our Client is one of the GTHA’s leading Planning & Design firms. Salary for the role is between $90,000 – $115,000 based on level of experience and exposure, plus bonus, benefits, RRSPs, and vacation.
The ideal candidate is an experienced designer with strong writing skills, a self-starter, and most importantly, a team player. There is ample opportunity for career advancement and progress. Our Client is an advocate for diversity and recognizes the value of leadership.
Responsibilities
- Provide detailed technical information and recommendations through written reports, public responses, internal memos, studies and presentations on current urban design issues and the implications of various aspects of land use and development.
- Prepare presentations for, and present in front of, clients, public and Council meetings.
- Create reports and planning applications such as urban design briefs, guidelines, and studies; and planning justification reports and opinion letters.
- Coach and mentor junior and intermediate staff.
- Collaborate effectively with the multidisciplinary in-house team of professionals.
- Ensure team is organized diligently and project files are in order.
- Review production of research and comprehensive due diligence reports.
- Lead communication with clients and external consultants.
- Oversee creation of visually appealing graphic materials.
- Manage all aspects of urban design on client files including submission of applications.
- Lead the preparation and organization of materials for Ontario Land Tribunal hearings.
- Interpret planning policies, regulations, and guidelines, to offer insightful urban design and planning policy recommendations for development applications.
Qualifications
- Self-motivated and strong organization skills
- Membership (or working towards membership) in professional associations such as the Ontario Association of Architects, Ontario Association of Landscape Architects, or Ontario Professional Planners Institute
- Strong analytical, research, and interpretive skills
- Demonstrated ability to be able communicate effectively
- Deep understanding of the OLT processes a strong asset
- Advanced knowledge of provincial and municipal policy and regulatory framework and other relevant legislation (specifically Urban Design Guidelines); knowledge of the Planning Act and its requirements with respect to all planning applications and appeals
- Creative problem-solving and solution-finding skills to gather relevant information to solve urban design and planning problems
- Advanced competency of software programs, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite (In-Design, Illustrator, Photoshop)
- Advanced knowledge of Urban Design and Community Planning theory, principles, practices and techniques
- Advanced verbal, written, and graphic communication skills
- Broad understanding of planning, urband design, architecture and landscape architecture
- Degree in Urban Design and/or Planning from an accredited university an asset
- Ability to convey advanced understanding of planning and urban design policy context
