What will your essential responsibilities include?
Key Accountabilities

• Responsible for coordinating the development of statutory loss reserves with the appointed actuary for quarterly and annual reporting
• Manage service delivery team for the end to end preparation and review of quarterly and annual statutory P&C return for filing with regulators. Provide support to regulator queries in support of filed returns.
• Other ad hoc duties and projects as required
• Ensure financial results are clearly understood and communicated to the business leaders through supporting documentation from financial controllers and operations teams
• Manage, coach and mentor junior members of the Canada finance team
• Preparation of the quarterly management discussion and analysis to explain variances/drivers of results
• Communicate proactively with the segment/corporate finance regarding significant changes/events that might materially affect the financial results of the insurance segment
• Filing of income, sales and premium tax returns with the assistance of external tax consultants as required
• Completion of quarterly analysis and variance commentary to senior management
• Primary responsibility for the preparation of the Canadian technical and operational annual budget, including quarterly reforecast as necessary
• Proactive communication with business leadership is expected in order to create a sense of partnership and teamwork
• Ensure the accuracy and integrity of the financial results of the business are appropriately supported
• Be the main contact for internal and external auditors and own the end to end year-end and quarterly audit process
• Actively monitor expense drivers and work with the business to ensure most efficient cost structure
• Preparation of quarterly results analysis to provide value added information to underwriters
• Review of monthly and quarterly general ledger bookings
• Development of new reports and analysis for improved internal reporting
• Review of reconciliations and some preparation of more complex reconciliations

Working Relationships

• External tax consultants – determination of the quarterly tax provision and filing of tax returns
• Accounts payable team – management of payments process to external vendors
• External appointed actuaries – development of statutory loss reserves for regulatory reporting
• Canadian underwriters - to provide value added analysis as well as understanding variances in quarterly financial results to plan and prior periods
• Service delivery team –quarterly statutory close and filing of regulatory P&C return
• External auditors – annual audit process and ad hoc requests
• Corporate and North America finance team – quarterly deliverables and ad hoc requests
• Internal actuarial team – quarterly reporting and analysis of reserves

• Must demonstrate sound knowledge of IFRS and US GAAP as it relates to the property and casualty insurance industry.
• Flexibility
• Strong aptitude in organization and planning
• Good team player with strong communication skills
• Experience with IFRS 17 will be considered as an advantage
• Ability to communicate complex concepts clearly to any stakeholder
• Acts with integrity and in the best interest of others
• Must have strong computer and interpersonal skills
• Intermediate to advanced insurance accounting experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Experience with Oracle E-Business Suite/Hyperion Financial Management would be an advantage
• Proficient working knowledge of the Microsoft Suite of products with intermediate to advanced experience with Microsoft Excel and Power BI
• Recognized accounting designation, preference given to a Chartered Professional Accountant designation or equivalent
• Bachelor's degree (preferably in accounting/finance) from a four-year university program
