Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences

Position Summary

The successful candidate will work in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences and will assist faculty members and their graduate students with fieldwork related research activities.

Duties

• Oversees and assists in the design and execution of new field-based solutions for geoscience field research campaigns, including the development of field-based experiments.
• Interprets and categorizes samples in preparation for cataloguing and archiving.
• Trains graduate students in various rock preparation techniques for chemical and mineralogical analysis of data samples (e.g., rock crushing, sample polishing etc.).
• Analyzes and assists with the interpretation of experimental data, summarizes findings in scientific reports.
• Develops a cataloguing and archiving method for research samples, including organization of the various rock sample storage facilities.
• Prepares, organizes, and maintains equipment for field campaigns.
• Reports findings and analysis at group research meetings, including recommending improvements to existing methods of analysis based on findings.
• Assists researchers with the logistics required for effective field research campaigns.

Qualifications

• Ability to work independently
• Ability to travel within Canada
• Ability to lift up to 50lbs
• Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level 3 on a scale of 0-4.
• Driver’s license
• Prior fieldwork experience
• MSc degree in Earth Sciences or related field
• Experience in project management
• Technical proficiency in basic and research-specific computing and scientific equipment
• Possibility of international travel
