Research Assistant


McKinney Research Laboratory


Macdonald Campus; McGill University


Supervisor: Melissa McKinney, PhD


Position Summary


  • Training students working in the lab
  • Maintaining laboratory protocols
  • Ordering lab supplies
  • Performing basic data and statistical analysis, preparing SOPs and reports
  • Troubleshooting and repairing laboratory equipment and instruments
  • Laboratory analysis of fish and wildlife tissue samples for ecological tracers (stable isotopes, fatty acids, contaminants)
  • Organizing and cleaning the lab
  • Daily maintenance and operation of laboratory instruments
  • Maintaining laboratory safety requirements and documentation


Required Qualifications


  • Basic statistical analysis skills
  • Minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in natural resources, ecology, environmental or analytical chemistry, geology or geosciences, earth or environmental science, chemical engineering or a related discipline.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills
  • Familiarity with analytical instrumentation, such as gas chromatography (GC), elemental analysis (EA), massspectrometry (MS) or related instrumentation
  • Excellent data management skills (lab notebook writing, spreadsheet organization and manipulation)
  • Strong ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong work ethic and ability to take initiative
  • General chemistry laboratory skills, including weighing, pipetting, centrifuging, vortexing, filtering, preparing solutions and reagents, and using fumehoods
  • Good written and oral communication skills


Preferred Qualifications (Not Required, But Considered An Asset)


  • One year of experience as a laboratory technician in a related field
  • Experience with fatty acid, stable isotope, or contaminant analysis
  • Experience in statistical analysis and interpretation of biological or environmental data (e.g., in R)
  • Experience in maintaining, operating, and/or troubleshooting GC-FID, EA-IRMS, GC-IRMS, and/or GC-MSD instruments


Hourly Wage


$28.44 minimum. To be determined based on education and experience
