R&D Lab Assistant

Summary

Blends and packages samples for shipping to customers’ and supports R&D activities by providing assistance to the Product Development team, as required. Provides cleaning maintenance for the pilot plant.

Essential Functions

• Blends and packages samples for customers; packages ingredient samples (straight pulls) for customers. Stores and retrieves retained samples of same.
• Perform other various similar and related duties as required by the Manager or Scientists.
• Assists scientists in sample preparations related to application testing, customer presentations and demonstrations.
• Maintains clean lab environment, involving daily cleaning of bench top surfaces, storage areas, equipment, utensils, dishes and glassware.
• Informs applicable scientist of any blending concerns that are encountered when making samples of his/her formulation(s).
• Non-Essential Functions
• Provides cleaning and maintenance for the pilot plant.
• Blends samples/obtains ingredients for scientists in support of product development activities.
• Packages and labels samples for shipping, when required.
• Processes inter-company sample requests, including documentation as required.
• Performs functions in compliance with both R&D and Production operating standards.
• Obtains stock of raw materials from the plant as needed by R&D, documenting appropriately; stores samples of all lab ingredients as required.

Qualifications

• Physical skills: required to regularly lift and /or move up to 25 kg.
• Must be able to work conformance to all GMP’s, HACCP and other safety programs of both the laboratory and plant environments, with minimum supervision.
• Technical Skills: be able to use a keyboard for computer work and be proficient with a calculator and scale. Familiar with metric system.
• Working knowledge of ingredients an asset.
• No known food allergy.
• High school diploma or one to three months related experience and training, or equivalent. Training to include procedures and equipment used in plant (production).
• Bilingual in French and English to be able to communicate effectively in a team environment.
• Mathematical Skills: ability to add and subtract to digit numbers, multiply and divide; perform these operations using units of weight measurement, volume, distance, money.

Work Environment

• Periodic exposure to: (1) loud environment, (2) airborne particles with stronger odors associated with spicy food ingredients, (3) cold, hot, wet and humid conditions, (4) walking and standing on concrete, (5) climbing steps, ladders, (6) standing on elevated surfaces, (7) various foods stuff [tasting].
• General laboratory setting.
