Job Description

Manager of Engineering, R&D and Continuing Airworthiness

Need Experience working with Transport Canada (TCCA)

Salary: $120k/year


Position Purpose and Objectives


Working under the administrative direction of the Director of Business Development, you will be responsible for the technical and administrative leadership of multiple functional areas in a matrix organization environment. Highly knowledgeable in the areas of aircraft design, development and certification, regulatory requirements, project management, organizing and directing multi-disciplinary cross-functional work activities to support company business objectives throughout the product development, certification, manufacturing and in-service lifecycle. Highly motivated in pursuing new product concepts and enhancing critical technical capabilities to drive and grow the business.


Duties and Responsibilities


The primary job duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Prepare and implement departmental training plans consistent with company business objectives.
  • Lead cross-functional design reviews to ensure seamless and efficient introduction of new products to full rate manufacturing.
  • Drive the Transport Canada (TCCA) approval process by developing and maintaining relationships with TCCA officials in the local and national offices through a solid understanding of and experience with regulatory process to facilitate the fastest path to approvals.
  • Support sales and marketing activities as required.
  • Present project status updates to the management team and externally to various stake holders.
  • Function as the certification and airworthiness SME through a strong understanding of the Canadian Aviation Regulations.
  • Create, develop and recommend changes in staffing, equipment and business processes to enhance the engineering standards through the adoption of best practices.
  • Ensure that MBA maintains our Manufacturing certificate.
  • Act as the Person Responsible for Manufacturing Activities (PRMA).
  • Lead Internal, Regulatory and third-parts Audits of the company QMS in the capacity of the PRMA.
  • Undertake and manage the engineering activities within the MBA business.
  • Manage a cross-functional team of internal resources and external resources in the development and execution of project plans to ensure all work is completed on-time and within budget.
  • Act as the change agent to identify and drive the adoption of engineering best practices through the development of a technology roadmap to strategically grow capabilities.
  • Support the evaluation and go/no-go decision-making process of candidate new product certification projects through a solid understanding of industry trends and certification requirements.
  • Other duties as required.
  • Drive the Transport Canada approvals process by recruiting and managing a team of contract Design Approval Representatives (DAR’s) to obtain STC and PDA/RDA approvals for new products.
  • Engage with internal and external customers to address complex technical issues, evaluate innovative product applications and technologies to support business profitability and growth.
  • Manage internal and external research and development activities.
  • Coordinate with customers and internally across the organization to resolve customer technical difficulties in a timely manner.


Supervisory Responsibility

  • Shared engineering resources on a project-by-project basis.
  • Direct engineering staff.


Working Conditions

  • Travel occasionally to customer locations to support design and program reviews
  • Travel occasionally to support research and development activities at third-party laboratories, customer test facilities and academic institutions
  • Travel occasionally to support trade show exhibits


Physical Requirements

  • A portion of time at trade shows requires standing for extended periods of time
  • A portion of time in the manufacturing plant and AMO shop requiring use of basic PPE
  • Primarily office duties working on a computer


  • You are a hands-on, walk-around leader with the ability to motivate, mentor and empower others while offering focused leadership in ambiguous circumstances.
  • You have passion for achieving technological excellence.
  • You have strong critical thinking and logical reasoning skills and the ability to apply them pragmatically to resolve issues and predict potential technical risks.
  • You have at least 4 years of experience managing TCCA certification projects to obtain STC and PDA/RDA approvals.
  • Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills
  • You possess superior analytical and problem-solving skills, the ability to gain internal support, operate independently with limited supervision and the ability to establish and maintain solid working relationships across the organization.
  • You have at least 8 years of progressive experience in the aeronautical field holding a Bachelor's degree or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Materials Engineering or equivalent.
  • You have a good knowledge of engineering design, development, certification and manufacturing processes and the requirements used in the aerospace industry.
  • You conduct business with impeccable ethics; leading by example and fostering ethical behaviour at all times.
  • You have your Professional Engineering License.
  • You are proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
  • You have ability to obtain/maintain security clearance, as required.
  • You have working knowledge of aerospace industry quality standards such as AS9100.
  • You have excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills with the ability to negotiate and influence, while exercising sensitivity to the audience when dealing with complex technical challenges.
