Job Description
Position: Land Agent

Division: Lands, Electricity Division

Location: Edmonton, AB

Rate: Starting wage is $50.75 per hour

Position Summary:

Always there. Anywhere. That’s us! We are committed to delivering inspired solutions for a better world. We care about our communities, we care about each other, and we care about showing up for those who need us. We value and encourage different perspectives, and we have the courage to do the right thing, even when it’s hard.

This role primarily focuses on liaison and negotiation services for ATCO Electric Ltd. and its affiliate companies. It is key to our operations, securing the necessary land rights for our distribution and transmission projects. This vital responsibility includes forging agreements on land rights with a diverse range of stakeholders, including private landowners, occupant/lessees, corporate entities, and government agencies like Metis Settlements, Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada, Special Areas, Municipal Affairs, and Alberta Infrastructure. Furthermore, this role ensures clear and consistent communication with all parties involved, particularly concerning activities on ATCO Electric's transmission and distribution rights of way, from pre-construction and construction to reclamation and maintenance stages.

We’re looking for someone who cares about their work and strives for more each day. Someone who challenges the status quo, embraces change, and thrives in a collaborative work environment. If you are someone who approaches work with passion, curiosity, and the courage to innovate, then this role is for you.

What You Get to Do:

  • Serve as a reliable point of contact for landowners, ensuring effective communication and delivery of commitments.
  • Collaborate with the Project Team and Project Contractor to develop strategies that minimize negative impacts from construction and reclamation activities on affected parties.
  • Negotiate and liaise with a broad range of stakeholders to secure land rights for electrical distribution and transmission facilities.
  • Execute property acquisitions for essential sites including substations, radio towers, storage facilities, and offices.
  • Finalize all documentation upon project completion.
  • Lead consultations for the routing and site selection of transmission and distribution facilities.
  • Build effective relationships with landowners and occupants, keeping them informed about any potential activities on or near their land.
  • Conduct meticulous research into current crop prices and land values by reviewing legislation and regulations from pertinent bodies such as the Alberta Utilities Commission and the Land and Property Rights Tribunal.
  • Document all landowner interactions, commitments, and conversations, reporting them in a timely manner.
  • Effectively communicate landowner concerns within the project team through an established communication plan.
  • Solve discrepancies with landowners and occupants with diplomacy and professionalism.
  • Assess and settle damage claims, ensuring fair resolutions for all parties.
  • Oversee the work of contract Land Agents, providing guidance as needed.
  • Supervise project activities to ensure stakeholder commitments and conditions are met.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Hold a grade 12 diploma along with a 2-year Land Agent diploma or Land Agent certificate from a recognized college or institute of technology.
  • Have related post-secondary education in a land-related field (considered an asset).
  • Possess a valid Land Agent license and Commissioner for Oaths status.
  • Have a minimum of 3 years of continuous field experience in surface land acquisition.

What We Offer:

  • Flex benefits
  • A culture based on caring, integrity, agility, collaboration, and striving for excellence.
  • Charitable donation matching
  • Competitive compensation
  • Training and mentorship programs
  • Tuition assistance program

We would like to thank everyone for their application; however, only those being considered for an interview will be contacted.
