Vancouver Coastal Health is looking for an Indigenous Wellness Coach to join the Indigenous Health Administration Team. Apply today to join our team!


Vancouver Coastal Health is committed to improving the health and access to culturally safe healthcare of the Indigenous people in our region, and we recognize that we all have a contribution to make in reconciliation and healing. VCH’s Indigenous Health team works with staff and physicians across all programs and departments to provide strategic leadership, partner collaboration and community engagement to assist VCH to become a more culturally competent and safe organization.


As an Indigenous Wellness Coach with Vancouver Coastal Health you will


  • Work with community partners and other internal/external stakeholders to lead the organization to meet its goal of enhancing First Nations, Metis, and Inuit employee support and access to culturally safe VCH services. This work is aligned with VCH’s people-centred values and focused on advancing Indigenous Cultural Safety.
  • Liaises with a variety of Indigenous community based agencies to offer support.
  • Provide coaching support to leaders individually and in teams.
  • Act as a resource to the organization and others, establishing best practices to ensure improved performance and organizational effectiveness and enhance cultural safety and support.
  • Coordinate a proactive approach supporting the vision of a safe and healthy workplace across Indigenous Health programs/services, which span VCH.
  • Be responsible for program support to achieve identified outcomes for all Indigenous staff by developing, implementing and evaluating integrated wellness programs, services and support for Indigenous Health Team members.
  • Ensure that employees are culturally safe by offering traditional culturally safe resources, communication, and understanding.


Education & Experience


  • Master’s Degree in Organizational Development, Business Administration, or in a related field or related experience, with demonstrated work with Indigenous communities.
  • For this position, we also want to highlight that First Nations, Inuit, Metis ancestry is regarded as directly relevant to the skills and knowledge for excellence in the position.
  • Pursuant to Section 41 of the British Columbia Human Rights Code, preference will be given to candidates who identify as Indigenous including First Nations, Metis or Inuit.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of offering cultural traditional practices, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in the health authority system, and in particular working with Indigenous individuals, communities or organizations on issues related to health and wellness.


Knowledge & Abilities


  • Demonstrated ability to build strong, positive relationships and utilizes strong communication skills and client-based solution-focused approach to finding creative and proactive ways to support staff wellness.
  • Demonstrated ability to work professionally, diplomatically, and persuasively to foster and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external partners.
  • Basic computer literacy to operate a computerized client care information system and word processing, spreadsheet, Internet and e-mail software.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant legislation and provincial/national standards on health, safety and wellness.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate team building, to work both independently and collaboratively, and ability to model and foster a positive, collaborative, and respectful team working environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities, organize work, and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated understanding of provincial and federal guiding principles and documents, for example In Plain Sight report, and calls to action to eliminate systemic racism in the health care sector.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and recognize current health care system gaps and barriers for Indigenous individuals and communities seeking health care.
  • Broad knowledge of human resources practices and approaches to organization wellness.
  • Demonstrated listening and information seeking skills that promotes open and direct communication and leads to a cooperative approach to problem solving.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and recognize power inequities within the healthcare system associated with colonization and the impact on healthcare to Indigenous people and communities.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct spiritual and cultural and historical assessments, to understand staff potential lived experience of intergenerational trauma and health inequities.
  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with key internal and external partners to promote and enhance services provided with sensitivity to diversity and indigenous lens.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply strength-based and Trauma-Informed Principles to practice, has completed trauma informed training.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, implement, facilitate and evaluate cultural groups and services, as applicable.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with community partners and with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and demonstrated ability to provide Indigenous culturally competent and sensitive care.
  • Ability to effectively lead and support teams, inspiring a shared vision that aligns with organization goals, objectives, and strategies.


As per the current Public Health Orders (Long Term Care/Seniors Assisted Living Provincial Health Officer Order and the Health Sector Order), as of October 26, 2021, all employees working for Vancouver Coastal Health must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19. Proof of vaccination status will be required.
