Salary Range: $59,848 - $77,804 per annum


YOUR FOCUS


Reporting to the Associate Vice-President, Human Rights & Equity, the Human Rights & Equity Officer resolves or refers complaints, aids in the development and research of EDI initiatives and tools, and provides research and analysis for HRE and UNB.


  • Consult other relevant UNB parties in the implementation of informal resolution strategies.
  • Respond to general inquiries, provide reasonable answers, or facilitate means to find a solution to inquiries.
  • Create and deliver educational materials on the informal and formal resolution processes.
  • Assist with the development or continuous improvement of presentations and training materials.
  • Provide advice and guidance on information resolution options to clients.
  • Provide advice/guidance on the formal complaint process as per UNB policies/the New Brunswick Human Rights Act.
  • Maintain data and report on intake and resolution activities. Prepare summaries of case files.
  • Passionate about advancing Human Rights and Equity through relationship building, community development and education at UNB.
  • Assist clients with written or verbal communications and support them through the complaint process.
  • Research best practices in equity, diversity, inclusion, and human rights.
  • Utilize various approaches that include but are not limited to anti-racism, anti-oppressive and trauma-informed approaches.
  • Design surveys and various instruments in conducting assessments of UNB community needs.
  • Identify opportunities and gaps to ensure compliance with legislation.
  • Determine if client concerns fall within the scope of HRE. Listen to concerns, ask questions, gather appropriate information, and complete appropriate documentation.
  • Research and assist in the development of multiple EDI resources to be distributed for use as needed.
  • Improve EDI knowledge at UNB through the creation of resources and presentations.
  • Prepare reports to meet both internal and external requirements.
  • Serve as a member of various committees such as Survey Governance, and policy review committees.
  • Manage the formal complaint process as per UNB policies and best practices.
  • Communicate and build relationships with various external stakeholders to support EDI best practices within UNB.
  • Research and summarize institutional policies/case law related to human rights and equity.
  • Manage the case file life cycles (open, add, close, destroy) and maintain confidential electronic records.


What You Bring


  • 3-5 years of experience managing conflict/responding to/resolving complaints of harassment and discrimination.
  • Core equity competencies and experience working towards anti-racism and equity education.
  • University Degree in a related field (e.g., Human Rights, Social Justice, Social Work, Administration, Human Resource, Law, etc.).
  • Strong equity lens with an understanding of the lived experience of equity-deserving/denied persons and communities.


Additional Strengths


  • Analytical skills to analyze and interpret complex policy, legislation, and reports, and develop recommendations.
  • Strong understanding of human rights policies and practices, harassment and discrimination legislation, and dispute resolution models and strategies.
  • Change Management training is an asset.
  • Sensitivity to and awareness of Indigenous, Black, 2SLGBTQIA+ and disability-related issues and their intersection(s) with other identities (Intersectionality).
  • Certification in conflict resolution and/or mediation is an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience of commitment to equity, inclusion, innovation, teamwork, flexibility, and integrity.
  • Strong equity lens, understanding the complexity of issues impacting Indigenous, Black, 2SLGBTQIA+, persons with disabilities (both visible and non-visible) and other equity deserving/denied persons can communities.
  • May consider lived experiences in an equity-deserving/denied community as an asset.
  • Experience in the design/implementation of educational programs, especially for adult learners.
  • Team player; goal and achievement-oriented.
  • Effective communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
  • Superior knowledge of the New Brunswick Human Rights Act and dispute resolution practices.
