Overview of the Position:
Fortress Insurance Company (Fortress) is looking to hire a General Accountant on a permanent full-time position. The General Accountant will report to the Accounting Manager and be responsible for the day-to-day accounting functions of Fortress. To be successful, the General Accountant should have a strong understanding of accounting principles, be a critical thinker, a savvy user of Excel and a fast learner of accounting software. This individual will play an important role in assisting the Accounting and Finance function to paint the financial picture for the organization.
Responsibilities Include:
•Assist in the preparation of accurate and timely financial statements
•Ensure timely reporting to provincial and federal insurance regulators
•Review the integrity of accounting information
•Liaise with Data team to ensure data consistency across systems, when pertaining to claims bordereaux and reporting to reinsurers
•Prepare monthly balance sheet and income statement variance analysis
•Book journal entries for month end close
•Analyze, reconcile, and investigate key accounts
•Assist in the yearly audit/review engagements
•Assist the Accounting Manager and Fortress Team in ad-hoc projects as required
Qualifications and Skills:
•Must be legally able to work in Canada
•Accounting or Finance-related degree, pursuing CPA designation would be an asset
•Knowledge of IFRS accounting standards is preferred
•2+ years’ experience in a full-cycle accounting role
•Insurance industry experience would be an asset
•Experience with accounting software systems (familiarity with Xero is a plus)
•Advanced knowledge of Excel
