The Opportunity
The City of St. Albert is recruiting an individual to join our Financial and Strategic Services Department as an Accountant III (AP), under the general supervision of the Financial Operations Controller (AP and Treasury).
This position will be responsible for the management of AP disbursements and payments, ensuring all City expenses are recorded in a timely and accurate fashion and adhere to procurement and financial policies. The Accountant III (AP) will oversee AP systems and procedures and provide guidance to internal stakeholders. The role also has responsibilities related to financial accounting and reporting, specifically processing monthly GST returns, reconciliations, accruals and other adjusting entries.
As the primary delegate of the Financial Operations Controller (AP & Treasury), the position will assist in interim and year end audits, preparation of the City’s Consolidated Financial Statements, and application of new Public Sector Accounting Standards. It is also a key role in supporting the Financial Operations Controller with the procurement card system for all corporate credit card holders.
This position will also assist with the development, documentation and maintenance of strong financial internal controls, ensuring that the highest standards of accountability for the City’s funds are established and adhered to.
The Accountant III (AP) will supervise a team of three (3) Accounts Payable Coordinators. This involves motivation and guidance, establishing priorities, and working with the team to identify opportunities for efficiencies and improvements.
There may also be the requirement to test financial system upgrades and enhancements.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Municipal accounting experience is an asset.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication skills, multi-tasking skills with the ability to interpret and communicate complex financial data to a variety of users.
- A self- starter with the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
- Proficient user of the Microsoft Office Suite and experience with a major accounting software system.
- Undergraduate degree or diploma in Business with a major in Accounting or Finance and working toward a professional accounting designation or recently designated.
- Prior supervisory experience.
- 3 years of relevant accounting experience, with a strong technical knowledge base in GAAP and preparation and review of year end financial statements.
HOURS OF WORK
We offer a bi-weekly compressed work schedule of 72 hours (Monday - Friday, 8:00 – 5:00 with a regular day off [RDO] every two weeks).
