Job Description
Position Overview
The Department of Physiology and Pharmacology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Exercise Trainer. This Fixed Term Full-time position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
The Exercise Trainer will perform routine tasks of moderate complexity. They will work independently on day to day duties required by the Principle Investigator. While stress levels are low in this role, moderate impact of errors can still occur. This position will work both independently and in a team environment.
This position will report to the Principle Investigator.
There is an option for the successful candidate to work between a 0.5FTE to a 1.0 FTE, depending on the needs of the project.
Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
  • Encouraging and teaching participants their required exercise programs at their required work rate intensity (as prescribed by research staff)
  • Oversee both exercise interventions (aerobic exercise and stretching and toning)
  • Providing positive feedback to participants regarding their effort and commitment to exercise program
  • Data entry, management and basic analyses
  • Reliable and safe operation of all laboratory equipment
  • Demonstrated strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
  • Teaching participants stretching techniques as recommended by the research study
  • Keep laboratory and work area clean and safe
  • Understanding of safety codes, standards, and systems related to specialization
  • Communicating effectively and efficiently with the Study Coordinator regarding any participant issues or concerns
  • Setting up all monitoring equipment (POLAR) at the track before each exercise session
  • Removing all monitoring equipment (POLAR®) from the track after each exercise session
  • Ensures supplies and lab equipment are clean and well stocked
  • Addressing any technical difficulties that may arise with the heart rate monitoring equipment
  • Assists other staff and students in the operation of equipment and laboratory protocols
  • Work in conjunction with the other exercise trainers and supervise 1-5 volunteers and summer students who attend the track daily
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite, Internet skills
  • Provide semi-skilled to skilled technical procedures to support the research project
  • Must be able to work independently with little to no supervision
  • Assist in the operation and maintenance of complex technical equipment
  • Knowledge of theory and practical application of technical procedures
  • Demonstrated strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
  • Must be open to learning and development, and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments
  • Knowledge of University core business systems is desirable
  • Required to be CPR-A & AED and CSEP-CPT certified
  • Keen interest in exercise and the aging population with a bachelor degree in a related field
