Job Description
Position Overview
The Department of Physiology and Pharmacology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Laboratory Analyst. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
The position of Laboratory Analyst for the Alberta Centre for Toxicology (ACFT) reports to the Laboratory Manager, and with accountabilities from both the Manager and the Director.
The Alberta Centre for Toxicology (ACFT) is a public health laboratory. It is under the direction of Health Surveillance, Alberta Health and administered by the University of Calgary under the jurisdiction of the Cumming School of Medicine. Samples include environmental samples (water and air samples) and biological samples (blood and urine). The workload varies according to the number of samples received and by number of ODP samples that test positive and require additional testing.
Work requires possible exposure to dangerous materials and/or situations and is conducted in an area with constant background noise from instruments and gas tanks pressure relief valves. The biological samples used by this position places the laboratory in the Biohazard Level 2 which requires University of Calgary hazard training.
Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
  • Conduct routine chemical tests following standard operation procedures using laboratory instruments: IC, ICPMS, Auto-Titrator, lmmuno-assay Analyzer, GCMS, GC-FID, and LCMSMS
  • Maintain an adequate level of supplies, reagents, standards for routine chemical tests and in the work bench area
  • Perform other assigned duties as required.
  • Prepare and validate calibrators, controls, buffers, reagents, standard solutions and other solutions as required for routine chemical tests
  • May assist in reviewing and preparing of manuals for test methods, training and orientating other staff, develop, validate and write-up test methods
  • Review data analysis prior to reporting and document quality controls. Maintain a good documentation of internal chain of custody, quality control charts, maintenance logs, verification logs, and preparation logs
  • Perform daily instrument calibrating and running quality controls. Assist in routine maintenance and trouble-shooting of instruments and equipment
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs is desirable
  • One year of related experience in chemical analysis using instrumental methods is desirable
  • English language skills in reading, writing and oral communication are required
  • Bachelor of Science in chemistry or equivalent
  • Ability to multi-task, work independently and effectively with minimal supervision, focus on attention to detail when performing tasks, produce high quality work with accuracy and speed, prioritize and maintain a flexible schedule based on needs and to maintain organized work area and work tasks
