Job Description
Position Overview
The Department of Physiology & Pharmacology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Laboratory Analyst. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
The position of Laboratory Analyst for the Alberta Centre for Toxicology (ACFT) reports to the Research and Development Manager and Alberta Biomonitoring Manager.
The Laboratory Analyst is responsible for basic daily/weekly/monthly routine instrumentation maintenance, method/instrument trouble shooting, running research and development samples, data analysis, inventory management and ordering instrument supplies. Position requires working on multiple different analytical procedures. Position is responsible for scheduling their own work day/week as determined by the job duties assigned and requires excellent time management skills so that deadlines are met.
Normal working hours are day shift, Monday to Friday. Some overtime and very occasional weekend work may be required.
Work requires possible exposure to dangerous materials and/or situations and is conducted in an area with constant background noise from instruments and gas tank pressure relief valves. The biological samples used by this position places the laboratory in the Biohazard Level 2 which requires University of Calgary hazard training.
Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
  • May assist in reviewing and preparing of manuals for test methods, training and orientating other staff, develop, validate and write-up test methods
  • Maintain an adequate level of supplies, reagents, standards as well as a chemical inventory list
  • Perform other assigned duties as required
  • Prepare and validate calibrators, controls, buffers, reagents, standard solutions and other solutions as required for routine chemical tests
  • Review data analysis and document quality controls. Maintain a good documentation of internal chain of custody, quality control charts, maintenance logs, verification logs, and preparation logs
  • Perform daily instrument calibrating and running quality controls. Assist in routine maintenance and trouble-shooting of instruments and equipment
  • Specific accountabilities are determined by the Manager depending upon individuals training and experience and the needs of the laboratory. Position may be responsible for performing analysis as required for research programs. Position may be responsible for recommending, implementing and validating new procedures or making improvements to existing procedures and maintaining established programs and procedures
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry or equivalent
  • The successful applicant will be required to take Workplace Hazard Materials Information System Certificate (WHMIS), Biosafety Level 2 training, and other safety related courses as provided by the University of Calgary
  • Minimum one year of related experience in analysis using LC-MS/MS or GC-MS/MS instrumentation is desirable
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs is desirable
  • Must have excellent communication skills and be a team player
  • English language skills in reading, writing and oral communication are required
  • Ability to work independently and within a team with minimal supervision, multitask, focus on attention to detail when performing tasks, produce high quality work with accuracy and speed, prioritize and maintain a flexible schedule based on needs
