What We Are
Our business is workplace law.
PortaLaw serves businesses, nonprofits, law firms and individual employees. Our lawyers provide practical advice and experienced advocacy in all non-unionized employment and workplace-related legal matters. PortaLaw is not a full-service law firm and our lawyers are not generalists. We keep to our niche - employment law - and we do it well.
We believe that work should bring you joy. This mantra guides how we advise and service our clients. But it also guides how we operate our business and how we treat one another.
We strive to be a place where people want to show up for work and enjoy their workday. We started by becoming a benefit corporation and launching into BCorp certification. By putting social impact at the core of our structure, PortaLaw is constantly searching for opportunities to do good through our law practice and business.
What We Are Looking For
PortaLaw is looking for a full-time employment lawyer, focused on advocacy and plaintiff-side work with an opportunity to support our employer advisory practice.
In the first 3-6 months we will invest heavily in training and mentorship to provide you with the skills and confidence to manage your own clients and carry your own caseload. Mentorship and a collaborative team approach will continue, but you will move away from a traditional junior role toward your own practice.
Our ideal candidate will:
- Be committed to ongoing personal and professional development.
- Have a passion for and experience with advocacy (employment or other). This includes drafting and responding to demand letters, negotiating, drafting letters, pleadings, applications and submissions, and appearing as lead counsel at applications, hearings or trials.
- Be a 3-5 year call.
- Enjoy working independently within a collaborative team.
- Have experience managing client relationships.
- Be excited about our practical, creative and innovative approach to law.
- Be comfortable with technology as we operate a primarily digital office.
Compensation
- Extended health and dental benefits including short-term and long-term disability.
- Participation in our bonus plans.
- Paid time off.
- Work-from-home stipend if working primarily remotely.
- $105,000 to $125,000 annual base salary which will vary based on year of call, experience, and personal targets.
Job Location
We work hybrid, meaning primarily from home and sometimes from a shared office in Mount Pleasant. We will assist you with setting up a home workspace. If you don’t have a private home workspace, you may be able to work full-time from our office.
Ideally, we’d like you to attend our in-person team events in Vancouver and take advantage of our shared workspace. However, we are canvassing candidates from all over BC.
We look forward to receiving your cover letter and resume. As part of your application, we encourage you to share how your unique personal background and experiences will add value to our team.
Only those candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
To apply, please submit a cover letter and resume to [email protected].
