Our client, a prominent Bay Street law firm is in search of a Legal Assistant to join their Labour, Employment, and Human Rights practice group. The Legal Assistant will report jointly to the legal professionals in the team and the Manager of Legal Assistant Services. In this role, they will be responsible for supporting the daily activities of up to 4 lawyers in their practices.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Handling all administrative tasks, such as file openings and ongoing file maintenance, processing cheque requests, coordinating meetings, managing incoming and outgoing mail, and preparing expense reports.
- Providing support and backup assistance to other professionals and/or assistants within the team whenever necessary.
- Maintaining communication with court staff as required and staying updated on any changes in court rules and filing procedures.
- Taking charge of arranging the service and filing of pleadings and documents with the court, particularly concerning Employment Litigation. Additionally, serving and filing Ontario Labour Relations Board and Human Rights Tribunal documents in accordance with the OLRB and HRTO Rules of Procedure and practice directions.
- Managing and updating the calendar for lawyers, including scheduling meetings, appointments, due dates, discoveries, expert witness sessions, and other court-designated hearings.
- Undertaking any other duties as assigned by the employer.
To be considered for the position, candidates should meet the following requirements:
- In-depth knowledge of legal terminology, court rules, and procedures would be advantageous.
- Successful completion of a post-secondary Legal Assistant or Law Clerk course.
- Proficiency and working knowledge in MS Office 2010, Windows 7, Worksite DMS, Elite 3E, and ACL.
- Familiarity with service deadlines and court filing procedures in Ontario Courts and the Rules of Civil Procedure. Knowledge of OLRB and HRTO rules and practice directions would be an asset.
- A minimum of 5 years of preferred experience in the areas of Labour and Employment and Litigation.
