What you do:
The role of the Defensive Driving Specialist is to develop the competency and skillset of our Commercial Drivers. The Defensive Driving Specialist will train Commercial Drivers on defensive driving techniques and measure their competencies both in a classroom and in the truck environment. The position will be responsible for hands on training for all new Drivers and on-going training for current Drivers.
Major Job Functions:
- Training for equipment handling, pre-trip inspections and in cab technologies
- Support EHS/Operations to update training modules when needed.
- Travel to other Yards/BTU's (Business Team Unit) on occasion
- Ensure 4Refuel’s policies and procedures are adhered to: curriculum training, safe operation, equipment maintenance, industry and legislative safety requirements
- Implement 4Refuel road safety initiatives in BTU's
- Participate in incident investigations.
- Assessing and following up on new hires ability to go out on their own safely and are qualified to operate the truck and perform all duties.
- Driver driving/working assessments as needed.
- Complete road tests &ride-alongs with potential candidates and new hire evaluations.
- Mentoring new and current Driver's.
- Review Lytx events and provide coaching to Supervisors/Drivers
- Conduct remedial training based on incidents, Lytx trends
- Conduct training need assessments and collaborate with management to identify skills or knowledge gaps, using the Lytx system.
- Conduct new hire EHS onboarding training.
- Ensure defensive driving skills are being utilized.
- All other duties as required which may include supporting EH&S initiatives.
- Schedule and execute defensive driving training sessions for all new Drivers and current drivers.
Specific Skills:
- Be able to work flexible hours
- Comprehensive knowledge of safe handling characteristics of fuel products.
- Passion/experience in instructing and mentoring others.
- Have strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Confident decision making.
- Exposure to Environmental, Health & Safety processes.
- Ability to adapt style to various learning abilities.
- Good organizational skills.
Education & Experience:
- Industry experience – previous experience as commercial driver trainer /coach/mentor.
- Experience in managing safety in the transportation industry preferred.
- Minimum DZ/Class 3, AZ/Class 1 is preferred.
- Experience in transportation of petroleum products is preferred.
Knowledge:
- Strong understanding of the role of driver trainer in commercial trucking and industry requirements (fuel industry is preferred)
- Clear understanding of the commercial driving regulations.
- Strong understanding of fuel transportation business
Accountability:
- Continuous and remedial training as required
- Collaborate with EHS to implement EHS inititates/programs/campaigns.
- Safe onboarding of new Driver’s and continuous training throughout their career.
- Continuous training on all regulations and safe driving course (train the trainer)
- Collaboration with local management to ensure the Driver is qualified to operate the truck and perform all duties in a safe and responsible manner.
