Introduction


InterRent REIT is a growth-oriented real estate investment trust engaged in increasing Unitholder value through the acquisition, ownership, management and repositioning of strategically located, income producing, multi-residential properties. InterRent REIT’s largest and most consistent source of income is its rental operations within high-growth urban markets. InterRent REIT manages a portfolio of over 94 multi-family residential properties representing almost 12,000 rental units in over 20 cities throughout Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia. The company consistently generates revenues, cash flows and earnings from rental operations that on a per suite basis are in the upper tier of the multi-family asset class.


InterRent Real Estate Investment Trust was formed in 2006 as an unincorporated, open ended real-estate investment trust and became listed on the TSX in 2007 in the midst of the credit crisis. In 2009 CLV Group was given the mandate to provide property management for InterRent REIT's portfolio of over 8,500 units in over 20 cities located throughout Ontario and Quebec. Through this transaction, CLV Group became the asset and property manager of InterRent REIT’s portfolio and immediately began a multi-year portfolio-wide program to drive value, reposition properties and restructure corporate and property site staff to a higher professional and customer service-driven level.


Through this transformation, InterRent REIT experienced significant growth. At the beginning of 2018, InterRent REIT internalized property management and was included in the S&P/TSX composite index representing the largest companies listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange. InterRent REIT surpassed $2 billion in assets and was recognized as one of the top 10 performing companies on the TSX over the previous 10 years.


Summary of role


Reporting directly to the CFO, the Director of Finance will have the unique opportunity to step in as a critical leader in the area of expertise in either property accounting or public financial reporting. As the Director of Finance, you will work independently and also closely with the Accounting and Finance, Investor Relations and Operations teams in order to review, analyse and report on the impact of financial information. As the Director of Finance, you will leverage your technical expertise to ensure the completion of timely and accurate reports which will allow for the senior leadership team to make well-informed decisions regarding future ventures and growth. You will act as a true business partner that will be looked to for your support, guidance and expertise to enhance the effectiveness of the operations. Additionally, alongside your peers, you will play a key role in the optimization of systems and processes.


As you gain further expertise in your primary technical area of expertise, you will be provided with the opportunity to expand your experience in other areas through a rotational leadership program. In unison with your peers in the Finance team, your hands will be in the pot of many vertices, affording you the opportunity to rotate into other financial areas in order to gain more company and industry knowledge. In time, you will be exposed to the management of all aspects of financial reporting, property accounting, tax planning, mortgage lending and credit facility management. Simply put, InterRent REIT believes in providing team members with the opportunity to experience and learn all facets of the industry.


Your role will be fast-paced, complex and challenging in nature and will call on your ability to pivot between multiple tasks on a routine basis. You will balance your time effectively, acting as both a mentor to your team and a trusted asset to the leadership team, and will be afforded the opportunity to collaboratively participate in critical decisions, allowing you to have a real impact on the company. Ultimately, this is a multifaceted, dynamic and hands-on role that will require you to lead by example and not by title.

From a technical perspective, you are a designated financial professional with progressive leadership experience. You will have a background in public accounting where you worked with public clients and/or experience working within various public companies, and will had exposure working in highly transactional industries such as real estate, property management, construction, manufacturing and/or hotel. You bring advanced accounting and financial reporting knowledge, backed by an expertise in budgeting, forecasting and modeling. You have always had an interest in and proven track record in elevating the success of organizations through the implementation of efficient processes, internal controls and systems. You will have a strong understanding of Excel. Experience with Canadian real estate tax and working with Yardi are considered strong assets.


You possess strong financial and business acumen and a ‘can do’ attitude that allows you to effectively balance your time spent between team oversight and hands-on work for the completion of various financial deliverables. You will have a proven track record in leading small teams that is complemented by a genuine passion for coaching and mentorship. You believe that the accounting function is not to simply keep record of financial transactions but can be a valuable partner to the company and help shape critical decisions in the future.
