Job Description
SAIT’s Business Intelligence and Analytics department supports the institution with market intelligence and business analysis. Our unique in-house research team, through consultation and the study of industry changes, labour markets and SAIT’s programming and products, helps inform essential business decisions.


The Opportunity


The Data Engineer will be responsible for developing data integration solutions by implementing pipelines through the ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) process. This will help meet data business needs and support reporting, and analysis through data models for scorecards and dashboards using data visualizations and storytelling to assist different departments at SAIT in gaining an in-depth understanding of their business performance.


Based on thorough analysis of the data, the position also makes recommendations to administrative and academic groups on issues or opportunities that are detected from the data framework solutions.


The Data Engineer is responsible for applying SAIT’s standards and implementing sustainable approaches ensuring data accuracy, for analysis in the use of reporting, dashboards, scorecards, and for developing collaborative working relationships with data stewards and key users of the data.


In addition to exceptional data management and analytics skills, communication skills and strategic thinking is critical for this position as data solutions will evolve based on the needs of stakeholders. Active listening and the ability to turn business ideas into data solutions is critically important.


Collaboration with other business areas is critical to understand the needs of the institution and to provide insights that will help SAIT make data-informed decisions.


The Role


Business Intelligence Solution Management


  • Responsible for maintenance and enhancements of existing Business Intelligence (BI) solutions that Business Intelligence and Analytics use to support reporting
  • Drive continuous improvement in BI solutions
  • Implement operational processes to assess, maintain and continuously improve solutions
  • Manage existing solutions for data management and integration to enable institutional analysis and strategic research functions within Business Intelligence and Analytics
  • Prioritize and plan solution enhancements
  • Responsible for maintaining and updating documentation for Business Intelligence (BI) solutions ensuring standards are applied and documented


Data Integration and Data Warehouse Solution Development


  • Research and design solutions for advanced/predictive analytics and machine learning
  • Create, populate and maintain data entities in Azure environment including objects in data lake storage, schemas, tables, and views in SQL database/warehouse
  • Execute data conversion as needed for migrating historic data from legacy solutions to Azure cloud environment
  • Represent Business Intelligence and Analytics on cross-functional teams and committees executing data lake and data warehouse projects
  • Collaborate with SAIT ITS Data Engineers to ensure that solutions and models are synthesized with the overall SAIT data architecture and deployment plans are in place
  • Develop pipeline specification documentation, test plans, data mart conceptual and logical models, and supporting documentation that meet SAIT data lake patterns and standards
  • Develop ETL/ELT pipelines Azure synapse to ingest, transform and populate Azure data warehouse
  • Implement error handling and data quality monitoring as part of solution development
  • Develop project plans complete with the collection and translation of business requirements into business intelligence solutions, resource needs and timelines
  • Maintain currency in the field of data warehousing and BI in the post-secondary sector; share new knowledge with BI&A team members
  • Independently design and implement new sustainable solutions to integrate internal and external data to support BI tools and analysis, including advanced analytics models
  • Collaborate with Business Intelligence and Analytics data stewards and DQM leads to ensure data governance processes and workflows are executed as part of the solution development
  • Lead project execution including tasks required of other Business Intelligence and Analytics team members
Qualifications & Experience


  • Competent in data visualization
  • Technical post-secondary credential in a field related to database development, business intelligence or information technology
  • Proficient programming skills using SQL, R, and/or Python
  • Strong technical documentation skills
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and align them with competing and changing deadlines
  • Competent in data modeling
  • Understanding of data quality management practices
  • Strong analytical capabilities and critical thinking skills
  • Collaborative mindset
  • Strong communication skills
  • Solid understanding of Business Intelligence
  • Experience working with a cloud data warehouse
  • Experience implementing data integration solutions
  • High level of proficiency with databases, ETL/ELT processes and pipeline development


Preferred


  • Microsoft Azure Data Engineer Associate certification
  • Two years proven related experience in a post-secondary experience environment
  • Experience with Banner
  • Bachelor or Masters Degree
  • Experience with Oracle and SQL server databases
  • Experience with MS Azure
