Job Description
Organization Overview:


The Mel Jr. & Marty Zajac Foundation is a not-for-profit organization whose mandate is to support children, seniors and those with special needs through innovative community projects focused on developing lifelong skills and independence. Our current major focus is the Zajac Ranch for Children, a camp in Mission, BC, for children and young adults with chronic, life-threatening and/or debilitating conditions.


Overview of Responsibilities:


The CEO is the leader of the organization, establishing a vision for Community Impact that is achieved through the efforts of a diverse team of high-performing leaders, staff and volunteers alike. The CEO as the Chief Mobilizer, leverages the power of relationships and networks and works across private, public and corporate sectors to improve conditions in the community. The CEO possesses a high level of broad business and management skills and is effective at generating resources and financial support for the organization. The CEO is dedicated to shared and measurable goals for the common good – creating, resourcing, scaling and leveraging strategies for broad investment and impact. The CEO is the steward of brand and understands their role in growing and protecting the reputation of the Foundation. The CEO is responsible for building trust in the Foundation and its relevance in the community.


Specific Accountabilities


  • Ensures volunteers understand their scope of responsibilities and are effectively managed by staff
  • Ensures the development and implementation of operational policies and practices that result in strong, effective, engaged and motivated employee teams that work as a cohesive unit in the achievement of Zajac’s objectives
  • Acts as a key spokesperson for Zajac. Accepts speaking engagements in order to enhance the understanding of Zajac’s mission, vision and goals
  • Ensures the Board is kept current on all relevant information regarding the operations of Zajac. Develops and presents recommended courses of action and alternatives to the Board for its consideration, in a timely manner as determined by the President and CEO
  • Donor and Strategic Relationships:
  • Ensures the effectiveness of the organization through ongoing performance assessments, coaching, training and professional development
  • Fund Development:
  • Ensures that the organization has effective operational policies in place to manage and report on the stewardship of all major donations
  • Strategic Management and Communications:
  • Provides strong leadership to all employees of Zajac in order to capitalize on the full potential of this critical resource. Enlists and engages staff, Board members and volunteers in the organization’s mission, vision and goals
  • Ensures the ongoing development of programs that support a healthy work environment and work-life balance
  • Fosters an environment which encourages teamwork, creativity, innovation and volunteer involvement
  • Keeps abreast of trends in the development field and recommends new and innovative approaches that could enhance the performance of Zajac
  • Leadership and Human Resources:
  • Oversees and assists with the preparation of the annual budget.
  • Ensures that all major donors and relationships are treated with respect and receive appropriate personal attention.
  • Ensures that stewardship practices are reviewed on a regular basis.
  • Develop and maintain an effective organization structure that reflects operational needs and the responsibilities of staff as they relate to the accomplishments of objectives
  • Oversees the development of processes and systems that ensure members of the Board of Directors have all the information necessary to properly exercise their governance and fiduciary responsibilities.
  • Forges strategic alliances where appropriate to support the achievement of Zajac’s goals and objectives
  • Ensures the development of, and overall adherence to, operating policies, processes and practices in order for Zajac to achieve its objectives while meeting its commitment to the highest level of integrity
  • Works with the leadership team to ensure that volunteers are provided opportunities to support the work of Zajac in a manner that is both rewarding and respectful
  • The CEO is accountable for building and leading high-performing teams, ensuring all teams are aligned and collaborating to achieve organizational results.
  • Organization and Management of Staff:

  • Maintains accountability for the operational and fiscal integrity of the organization within policies set by the Board of Directors. The CEO assesses organizational capacity to implement strategies and identify gaps in systems and staffing; directly supervises Senior Leadership positions and establishes individual goals; works with the Controller to manage organizational spending, monitor budget compliance, and mitigate financial risks; and ensures that goals of inclusiveness and diversity among staff and volunteer are met
  • Ensures the special events and third-party events are managed in a manner that ensures financial success and mitigates financial and reputational risks.
  • The CEO is charged to drive key results in fundraising; to identify, cultivate and solicit prospective donors and key leaders of prospective new corporate partners; to leverage personal and professional contacts and relationships into fundraising opportunities; and to promote a culture of fundraising in the organization, both at the staff and board level
  • Finance & Operations:
  • In collaboration with the Board and the leadership team, assists in the development of the strategic plan that charts the future course of Zajac
  • Trends in Development:
  • Partners with the Board of Directors and the Senior Leadership team to craft organizational goals and develops strategies to ensure that they are achieved.
  • Annual Objectives for the CEO:
  • Ensures volunteers understand their roles and are provided with the support they need to be effective and productive
  • Lead, mentor and support a talented and high performing team to achieve annual revenue targets and key performance indicators by providing strategic support, mentoring and the resources needed to succeed.
  • Responsible for working with all committees who are responsible for grant/fund distribution to ensure Zajac’s funds are distributed according to policy and that grant requests meet Zajac’s criteria
  • The CEO serves as the principal resource to the Board of Directors and its key committees and gives strong direction in policy formulation and interpretation.
  • Ensures that all avenues for building relationships that will benefit Zajac are fully explored and capitalized on
  • As the public face of Zajac, effectively represents the organization in a broad range of public forums, special events, children’s events and meetings where the presence of Zajac will advance public awareness and donor relations
  • Develops positive and productive relationships with external stakeholders including donors, partners, government officials and corporate community
  • Each year, in conjunction with the leadership, establishes a list of objectives in the context of the Strategic Plan to be achieved by the CEO in the upcoming year. These objectives will form the basis for the annual performance assessment of the CEO
  • Ensures the systems and processes are in place to manage the stewardship requirements of all gifts to Zajac
  • Ensures an open and collaborative culture that has outstanding donor development and stewardship at its core.

Requirements


EXPERIENCE / POSITION REQUIREMENTS


  • Substantial experience working in the non profit sector, and interacting with volunteers and diverse boards. Alternatively, extensive senior strategic leadership experience in the management of organizations of comparable size and mission
  • Ability to command the confidence and respect of stakeholders
  • Expertise on issues relevant to the organization
  • A demonstrated track record of promoting diversity and an ability to build collaboration with the community at large
  • Experience for 7-10 years in Senior Strategic Leadership required, 3 years in role may substitute for an advanced degree
  • Undergraduate degree required. Training experience or advanced degree preferred in business, public administration, or not-for-profit management. Experience for 7-10 years in a Senior Strategic Leadership role required – 3 years in role may substitute for an advanced degree.
  • Experience in developing partnerships, building teams and conflict management
  • Experience in building revenue and increasing philanthropic support
  • Must have unquestioned integrity; a long-term perspective; a strong sense of accountability; a practical ability to get things done; wisdom and good judgment; a fair and thoughtful approach to management, combined with flexibility and courage to shift direction and experiment with new initiatives; excellent verbal and written communications skills; a high energy level and sense of humour
  • Must demonstrate a high level of intelligence and intellectual curiosity and a desire to explore new ideas and innovative approaches to solving problems
  • Experience in or across multiple sectors, including non profit, public and corporate environments
