Job Description

Position Title:Category Manager - Buyer


As a category manager and buyer you will strategically plan out and purchase products for our equine and pet businesses.You possess great analytical and research skills and are a seasoned pro who works with vendors to create strong partnerships.You enjoy sourcing new products and are constantly monitoring the market and economic conditions to ensure that products are competitive and sourced at the best possible cost.


Duties and responsibilities

Purchase Plans

oReview and manage weekly purchase plans to ensure regular replenishment

oPlan and maintain accurate lead times and target periods

oIdentify/manage any problems or concerns such as retail changes and backorders

•Pricing and Margins

oEnsure retail pricing is accurate and in line with the current market

oManage vendor price changes and margin to meet profitability targets

oCultivate relationship with suppliers, negotiating contracts, finding new sources and developing new practices to drive value in the supply chain

New Products

oResearch new, on trend and quality product with knowledge of Canadian equestrian market

oSource and secure new vendors when required

oAnalyze market and estimate sales goals

oEnter master data to set up new skus as required

•Product Development

oIdentify new product development opportunities within private label brands in your portfolio

oDesign and develop product solutions meeting minimum margin and retail requirements as established through category reviews

oOwn day to day communication with international suppliers, ensuring production timelines and product issues/delays are resolved

oTroubleshoot inefficiencies in product development and propose solutions

Category Development & Reviews

oCreate a master plan and action plans to increase category performance and efficiency

oRegularly assess the performance of assigned categories and segments, evaluating sales volumes, margin, markdowns

oEnsure product is on trend with industry and competitively priced


Experience & Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with equestrian experience/ knowledge!

3-5 years of related experience in a purchasing function

Degree or Diploma from an accredited institution in a related area of study

Advanced MS Office skills - strong use of MS Excel including pivots, x/v lookups

Experience developing and launching multiple products from start to finish

Strong negotiation, problem solving, and multi-tasking skills
