Casual Supported Child Care Worker

The Cowichan Valley Regional District is now accepting applications from prospective candidates to join our organization as a casual Supported Child Care Worker at the Shawnigan Lake Community Centre in the South Cowichan Recreation Division within the Community Services Department. Reporting to the Child Care Coordinator, South Cowichan Recreation the Supported Child Care Worker provides personal care to children (child) aged three to five years old and supports/facilitates the integration of the child into playschool and/or a community program. This position may also have a reporting relationship to an external agency and may provide input to or participate on the team responsible for determining the child’s care requirements.

Level I A minimal level of care; child may require some assistance with speech, social skills, behavior management.

Level II Level I plus a more moderate level of care; child may require assistance with more challenging behavior management, violent tendencies, and medication administration.

Level III Level I & II plus a higher level of care; child may require assistance with activities of daily living including assistance feeding, toileting and specialized medical care.

Education/Training

• Level II Level I plus College level program of study with a personal care focus component.
• Secondary school graduation plus college or university courses in Early Childhood Education and Behaviour Management, or training as a Teacher’s Aide, or in Child & Youth Care or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Level III Level I & II plus ECE Certification is preferred.
• ECE Certification would be an asset.

Experience

• Level II A minimum of practicum experience providing personal care and behaviour management to children aged three to five years old who require a moderate level of supported child care.
• Experience providing personal care and behaviour management to children aged three to five years old who require supported child care.

One (1) Year Of Experience Preferred.

Level III Three (3) years of experience providing personal care and behaviour management to fragile children aged three to five years old who require a high-level of supported child care.

Occupational Certification

• Certification/training in relation to the child’s needs.
• First Aid Level I with CPR C

Hours of work are based on operational need and may vary to accommodate facility operations. As this is a casual opportunity, there are no guaranteed hours of work.

This non-union casual opportunity is compensated based on the level of child being supported. The range is between $19.73 - $21.98 per hour, plus an additiontal 17.2% in lieu of benefits, vacation and staturory holidays, as per the Non-Union Wage Scale (2023 rates).
