Job Description
Legal Aid Saskatchewan (LAS) is seeking an accounting /payroll professional to join our access to justice passionate team. This position will be based in our Head Office in Saskatoon and is a full-time permanent position starting immediately.

Main Purpose


As a member of the finance team the Accounting / Payroll Coordinator works under the supervision of the Director of Finance and provides accounting, payroll, and administrative support for the Commission. The ideal candidate should have a well-rounded background in accounting and payroll and desire to assist people by adhering LAS core values: Compassion, Collaboration, Courage and Commitment.


Key Responsibilities


Payroll: Under the guidance of the Accounting/Payroll Officer, calculates, enters, reviews and processes semi-monthly payroll. Generates ROE’s for departing employees, and performs year-end reconciliations for processing T4’s in order to meet CRA deadline. Responds to payroll related inquiries from employee(s) by collecting and analyzing information. Updates payroll records in ADP Workforce Now and accounts for payroll deduction records. When required, makes payroll adjustments for retroactive pay, and other collective agreement changes. Performs data entry for benefits enrollment. In conjunction with Team People & Culture (HR), ensures enrollment forms for new employees are complete and accurate. Reviews and ensures that all payroll related remittances are timely and accurate.


Accounts payable: Under the guidance of the Accounting/Payroll Officer, performs data entry and payment processing for accounts payable invoices and expense claims. This includes set up electronic fund transfers (EFT) and ensures completeness of all payment transactions.


Month-end and annual processes: Under the guidance of the Accounting/ Payroll Officer, reconciles the General Ledger monthly, enters journal entries and bank reconciliations. Generates financial, GST, WCB, Trust account, and Health Care Spending Accounts reports and payments. As the CVA coordinator, liaises with and provides monthly reports for the government. Assists with journal entries for the Endowment Trust Fund. Completes monthly payroll survey to Provincial Ministry of Justice.


Annual audit support: Works with the Director, Finance and Accounting/ Payroll Officer to support the provincial audit. Provides documents for the Provincial Auditors as required.


All Other Duties As Assigned.


Essential Education and Experience


  • Experience: Minimum of two years of previous related experience, payroll experience would be an asset.
  • Attention to detail: Achieves thoroughness and accuracy when performing tasks through concentration and attention to detail.
  • Technology acumen: Able to operate computers and familiar with Microsoft Office (Word and Excel). Knowledge and familiarity with accounting (Sage 300) and payroll software (ADP Workforce Now).
  • Education: High school graduation and two years of relevant post-secondary education (i.e. basic accounting and payroll) or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Payroll knowledge as an asset: Has functional and technical knowledge and skills in payroll including legislative requirements.
  • Able to work under pressure, time sensitive deadlines, and multi-task: Deals with constraints including deadlines or time constraints which may at times, be outside of personal control. Able to multi-task, plan, and set priorities.
