Summary
The Academic Director is responsible for leading the academic management of the school, ensuring the academic quality of curriculum and program delivery is of the highest standard. Key elements of the role include instructor recruitment, end to end onboarding, performance management, and design and supervision of professional development initiatives.
Key Responsibilities and Capabilities
ACADEMIC LEADERSHIP:
- Build strong relationships with all student services and operational staff, including other ILAC team members, in support of making teaching and learning central to educational excellence.
- Develop, innovate, and maintain the instructor professional lifecycle to provide an exceptional workplace experience and quality program delivery.
- Lead the implementation of plans, policies, strategies, and key projects for the Academic Department.
- Work with functional departments to support student success related to the following: retention initiatives, attendance, student satisfaction surveys, classroom performance, time to graduation/completion of levels.
- Provide academic leadership and select, train, develop, manage, and lead faculty and staff team members according to the guidelines provided by the VP Academic.
TEACHER MANAGEMENT & STUDENT SUPPORT:
- Oversee effective/efficient class allocation (scheduling and assignment of faculty) meeting institutional budgetary targets.
- Be a trusted advisor and coach for the academic and instructional teams.
- In collaboration with Campus Managers, train, support, coach, and enable instructors to be the best teachers they can be.
- Cultivate a teacher culture that reflects ILAC’s values, vision, and purpose.
- Support a learning culture that encourages knowledge sharing, feedback, growth, and a commitment to life-long learning.
- Oversee teacher recruitment cycle, including management of the TESOL Diploma program, to ensure high quality teaching and staffing needs are met.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:
- Maintain current knowledge of program standards and regulations (Languages Canada, TESL Canada), including trends in English Language Training (ELT).
- Attend conferences and association meetings as required (TESL Ontario, BC TEAL, Languages Canada).
- Oversee in-house teacher professional development scheme.
OTHER:
- Support and help develop a positive workplace culture.
- Adapt to and reacts to the needs of a rapidly growing and changing business and understands the complexities of a large organization.
- Serve the business in good faith, promoting and protecting the business's best interests.
- Comply with all employment obligations.
- Complete special projects and reports as needed.
- Prioritize workload to ensure work of the greatest importance to the business is undertaken with urgency and to a high standard.
- Promptly undertake to complete all reasonable and lawful instructions and directions given.
Requirements:
- Negotiation and decision-making skills
- High level and experience in written and verbal communication
- Excellent English language and interpersonal skills
- Minimum 4 years of teaching experience
- Effective leadership skills
- University Degree and TESOL certificate or diploma are must have
- Strong analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills
- Minimum 2 years of management and leadership experience in an academic setting
- Knowledge of curriculum and student assessment/evaluation
