Position Description:
Reporting to the Dean, Centre for Preparatory and Liberal Studies, the Associate Dean, provides collaborative academic leadership and management of the School of Work and College Preparation (SWCP) in alignment with the strategic initiatives of the College's academic plan. The Associate Dean is accountable for providing both academic and administrative leadership, including supervision and direction to faculty, managers, support staff, and students within the SWCP. The SWCP currently runs 10 diverse full-time programs, both on-line and on campus, as well as multiple initiatives and short programs.
Key responsibilities:
- Leads the development, monitoring and directing of the SWCP operating budget in collaboration with the Academic Operations Manager, CPLS Finance and Operations Manager, and the Dean. Oversees and ensures fiscal accountability for all funding sources accessed to operate SWCP programs and initiatives.
- Maintains a high level of performance through all aspects of people management, supervising 80-100 employees in any given semester. Conducts effective hiring, orienting, and developing faculty, managers, and support staff. Conducts ongoing performance reviews, providing regular feedback, coaching and mentorship.
- Provides leadership to SWCP management team and actively participates in all CPLS leadership activities.
- Works closely with all areas of the College to ensure successful pathways for SWCP students and graduates. Leads partnership development and maintenance with external academic and community partners, including Program Advisory Committee (PAC) with SWCP programs and initiatives. Ensures positive and effective brand awareness of SWCP programs, working collaboratively with Marketing and Communications, Registrar’s Office, Community Partnerships Office, Global Partnerships & Education Office, and other areas to ensure positive reputation across the College and the community.
- Leads workload and workforce planning for the SWCP, determining faculty teaching and complementary function assignments, making strategic human resource decisions and maintaining the best interests and needs of the SWCP.
- Works collaboratively with Dean and the leadership team in the development and implementation of the Centre’s and the School’s strategic plans[DR1] as part of the college’s academic planning process.
- Ensures that the objectives of the SWCP are attained through effective supervision of the teaching and learning processes. Engages, encourages and directs scholarly and applied research activities.
- Resolves conflicts and addresses complaints – from employees and from students – and manages complex team dynamics effectively following relevant College policies and procedures and accessing appropriate resources and supports.
- Initiates, facilitates, and leads the review, development, implementation, and quality assurance of new and existing programs and initiatives in response to changing external and internal factors. Ensures a focus on access, equity, and inclusion in delivering high quality, student-focused programming.
Educational and Experience Requirements:
- Master’s Degree and Bachelor’s Degree in areas relevant to access programming and adult education.
- Additional certification in teaching, UDL, project management, leadership, etc., is a strong asset.
- Demonstrated administrative/leadership experience, including developing and managing budgets, administration of policies and procedures and management of human resources.
- Minimum nine (9) years of experience in the education field, including management/leadership experience, preferably in a unionized environment.
- Experience in community work, widening access to education.
- Advanced knowledge and experience in the field of adult education, access, and preparatory programming, and other specialized programming to widen opportunities and pathways for individuals and communities facing barriers to education and work success.
- Experience in fostering excellence in teaching and learning and in UDL-aligned program and course design.
Skills and Attributes:
- Demonstrated expertise in teaching and in curriculum development. Experience providing leadership to teachers to advance quality in programming and to improve the student experience. Interest in engaging teachers in activities to advance the scholarship of teaching and learning in access programming.
- Demonstrated commitment to uphold the College’s priorities on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Skills in American Sign Language are an asset, as is experience working in programming designed for individuals dealing with complex mental health concerns and/or addictions, or individuals with intellectual or other disabilities.
- Digital skills essential, including expertise in virtual management as well as relevant experience with software to support teaching, research, and administrative activities.
- Skills in utilizing data to inform decision-making and set strategic priorities to widen access, improve the student experience, and advance on student success and pathway achievement goals for the School.
- Skills in systems-thinking, strategic planning, and creative problem-solving. Strong ability to set priorities and manage time effectively to meet commitments and achieve goals.
- Willingness to work remotely and on campus as well as travel between campuses and for external meetings and events.
- Ability to expertly and inclusively lead others in ensuring accessibility, reduction of barriers, and application of UDL in courses and programs.
- Experience managing multiple, diverse teams. Advanced leadership skills, including advanced communication, collaboration, team building, conflict resolution, negotiation, and change management skills. Demonstrated ability to create a positive, inclusive, and community-focused environment across the School.
- Strong interest in creating new preparatory programs, including STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) pathways for students.
Interview process may consist of a practical skills component.
