Job Description
More Specifically, His/her Main Tasks And Responsibilities Include
Under the authority of the Prevention and Health Promotion Coordinator and as part of the regional tobacco team, the Tobacco Educator (TE) shall be responsible to find creative, community-based and Inuit-appropriate strategies to prevent and control smoking and promote a smoke-free lifestyle. The TE will be trained in all aspects of the job.
  • Being a positive role modeL
  • Referring smokers to health professionals who can prescribe smoking cessation aids.
  • Organizing local tobacco reduction campaigns in the community.
  • Health education and reaching out to the various organizations and community members
  • Counseling individual smokers who may want to stop smoking.
  • Implementing community-based activities to help prevent smoking among children, youth, and adults (including ex-smokers), with a special focus on pregnant women and young mothers.
  • Providing tobacco education in schools, youth centers, family houses, Elders’ homes, community gatherings, on local radio shows, on Facebook Live events, etc.
  • Tobacco education: Be willing to receive training and share important resources with the population
  • Any other tasks necessary and appropriate to achieve the objectives of the TE role.
  • Cultural respect: Encourage traditional Inuit lifestyles and practices
  • Collaborating with the Regional Tobacco Team and with potential partners, being proactive in your communities, and do some networking
  • Offering group counselling to smokers.
  • Promoting efforts to reduce exposure to second-hand and third hand smoking
  • Develops the core competencies needed for effective functioning as a TE (with support from the Regional Tobacco Team).
  • Collaborating with the Regional Tobacco Team on regional campaigns.
Qualifications
  • Being a non-smoker (ex-smoker or never smoked) will be an asset, or smokers willing to try to quit smoking;
  • Experience in intercultural and multidisciplinary settings will be an asset.
  • Excellent understanding of community;
  • Oral and written communication skills in two of the three languages used in Nunavik (Inuktitut and English or French);
  • Be part of a community of practice and participate in relevant trainings
  • Excellent Initiative and ability to work independently;
Candidates who are beneficiaries of the James Bay and Northern Québec Agreement shall receive priority.
Conditions And Benefits
  • Permanent, full-time position (35 hours/week)
  • Telework position or based in Nunavik
  • Salary according to the rules set forth by the MSSS ($27.08/h to $47.98/h)
