Job Description
This position is a part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).


In accordance with the Administrative and Professional Officer Agreement , this full-time continuing position offers a comprehensive benefits package found on our Benefits Overview page and annual salary range of: $64,186 - $106,970.


This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person with work primarily taking place at North Campus Edmonton.

Position Summary


Reporting to the Manager, Careers and Work Integrated Learning (CWIL), the Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Officer contributes to the success of a suite of work integrated learning programming in the Alberta School of Business, including our Co-operative Education and MBA Internship programs. Responsibilities include student advising on career and professional development, employability and work search, as well as providing opportunities for student reflection and the assessment of the students' learning and success.


The team of WIL Officers contribute to program marketing, developing employment opportunities and relationship building with external corporate stakeholders and community partners. They work independently and collaboratively to attain high levels of measurable achievement in our fast growing programs by providing service to students and maintaining employer and community partnerships which result in fulfillment of mutual goals. Co-operative education provides a paid, supervised, evaluated academic work experience component that is noted on a student's transcript and degree parchment. WIL Officers also contribute to the maintenance of accreditation compliance and a set of standards as defined by Co-operative Education and Work-Integrated Learning Canada (CEWIL). In addition, WIL Officers work closely with campus WIL and career services delivery partners to ensure that the student experiences are maximized through collaboration, non-duplication of service, and active engagement in knowledge sharing. WIL Officers will ensure that students are aware of the full range of work-integrated and experiential learning opportunities available on campus both within and outside of the Alberta School of Business.


Duties


  • Coordinates and/or facilitates workshops and other special events designed to enhance career education and student engagement (e.g. presentations at Open House and workshops)
  • Teaches and educates students about the co-op and internship experience, program requirements and prepares them to be successful in their WIL work search
  • Manages and coordinates on-site meetings which includes evaluations and working with students who are experiencing complexities in their work terms
  • Facilitate conflict resolution processes and mediation to address issues between student, supervisor or others when they arise during a student work term including negotiation of performance improvement action plans
  • Provides feedback on work term reports
  • Serve as a champion of student, faculty and alumni engagement as well as serving as an ambassador of the University of Alberta
  • Reviews employer evaluation process of students; provides pass/fail grade recommendation
  • Advise students on best practices for employment success during work terms
  • Provide expertise to stakeholders by relying on a well-rounded knowledge base
  • Help resolve performance issues and address work place concerns or issues related to employee rights
  • Advise students with career planning issues and co-op program concerns or refer to appropriate CWIL staff member or other campus resource
  • Responsible for the overall management of the co-op student recruitment process and effective interactions with employers; support MBA program staff in ensuring that MBA students are aware of and have access to summer Internship opportunities
  • Responsible for relationship building and job development to meet the objectives of the Faculty related to coop, internships and other WIL opportunities
  • Facilitates and conducts formal assessments for WKEXP Courses


Qualifications


  • Class 5 driver’s license, non-GDL; clean driver’s abstract
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to perform functions of promotion, counseling, education and assessment
  • General knowledge of business, and the various disciplines, within the context of academia, industry, and employment
  • Ability to handle multiple demands and skills to assess priorities in a time sensitive environment
  • Knowledge of Google Suite applications; familiarity with student related university business systems such as PeopleSoft and Orbis
  • Research skills to identify trends and develop job opportunities to changing or emerging business climates
  • Self-motivated, entrepreneurial and loves to network and immerse in a wide variety of professional networking events, boards and other activities
  • Travel, evening and weekend work may be required
  • Possess judgment to understand and analyze interpersonal relationships, and ability to facilitate communication, conflict resolution skills and make referrals as required
  • Initiative and drive to develop and maintain relationships with corporate, academic and student stakeholders
  • A minimum of an undergraduate degree in Business or in a discipline that emphasizes career development, counseling, experiential learning, adult education, management, communication, or a related discipline
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of related workplace experience in career development, co-operative education, and student advising
  • Provincial and federal (and potentially international) employment standards and human rights legislation knowledge
  • Ability to utilize effective analysis and judgement; use tact, diplomacy and discretion/confidentiality
