Job Description
What Is The Role

Shell TDP is a dynamic, individualised programme like no other. Typically, it takes 2-3 years to complete but no two trainees follow the same route. We will assess your strengths, weaknesses, experience, and aptitude and then tailor a rotational programme that allows you to develop the competences you need – both to meet the requirements of the trading desk you’re assigned to today and to be an accomplished, all-round trader tomorrow. You will be working alongside, and learning from, some of the best traders in the business, tapping into a wealth of insight and experience. Participants will build solid understanding and hands on experience of the key systems associated with the life of a deal –Operations, Demurrage/Claims, Contracts, Credit, Risk Control, Scheduling, Analysis and Trading strategies/ fundamentals. There are regular performance reviews and assessments to review your progress and support your development with the right level of coaching and feedback. Along the way, you’ll sharpen your ability to analyse markets and manage risk and learn how to successfully negotiate and structure deals –everything you'll need to apply for a permanent trading role with us on completion. It is contingent to pass all relevant assessments and achieve sign-off from the programme to be considered Trader Ready and to be competitive for any trader roles. In the event that candidates do not meet the criteria to be signed off from the programme or become a full time Trader, on mutual agreement their departure window will open, they will be supported to find alternative roles as per local policy.

Dimensions

Our traders can express their individual intellect and commercial flair but with the backing of a business that’s been globally successful for more than 100years. Through trading natural gas, power, crude oil, oil products, environmental products and freight –equivalent to around 13 million barrels of oil every single day – our global trading teams have the power to shape Shell’s market position and make a huge impact on our profitability.

Requirements:

Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.

You don’t need trading experience to join us but would possess minimum of 3 years of work experiences. You could come from any of the CoBs inShell - for example Finance, Manufacturing, or any of our commercial businesses.

Commercial acumen - You’ll need to cultivate an incisive understanding of global energy markets work – that means you should be entrepreneurial, self-motivated, and commercially acute. With a keen interest in how business works, you’re passionate about working in trading and excited by the prospect of unearthing opportunities to create monetary value.

Analytical - You’re numerate and highly analytical. You’ve shown you can digest wide amounts of information from different sources, pinpoint the relevant details from a huge range of data, and synthesize it to form critical insights and trading strategies.

Adaptable - The market changes by the minute so you need to be comfortable thinking on your feet and making quick decisions, even if you don’t have all the facts at your command. Speed of thought is vital; you’re someone who can move easily between a micro and macro view.

Collaborative

This is a highly open, collaborative environment where we achieve results through teamwork. You’ll be talking to colleagues and contacts all over the world, so you’ll need to be able to change your social style to suit your audience. We value people who’ve proven they can persuade and influence; in English and in a mother tongue like Arabic or Chinese if you are operating in those markets.

Responsible In trading, the risks you take must be calculated and the decisions you make considered. You’ll be accountable: someone who takes responsibility for their decisions and can adhere to both the letter and the spirit of all relevant legislation. You’ll always work with Shell’s values of honesty, integrity and respect for others firmly in mind.

Additional Information

The selection process spans across 3 stages.

Stage 1

To apply you will need to complete a short application form and submit a CV. You will then be invited to complete two online assessments designed to test your numerical ability and logical thinking.

Stage 2

Successful applicants will be invited to complete a telephone interview with our Trading assessors. This hour-long session will consist of a case study, and competency-based interview with motivational questions.

Stage 3

If progressed to the final stage, candidates will be invited to an assessment centre at a Trading office. They will take part in several individual assessments including an investment scenario, a commercial case study and a structured interview. Candidates will also have the opportunity to meet and network with people working in trading to gain a better understanding of the culture and career opportunities in Shell T&S. If successful, you will be allocated to a desk based on business needs and individual suitability. Outcomes of the assessment centre will be communicated to you within 48 hours of the assessment centre day.

Candidates to note key dates as follow and to keep themselves available during that period to participate in the selection process. Travel to a Trading location may be required to participate in the assessment centre. Not being able to take part in any segments will mean exclusion from the selection process.

We aim to meet the world’s growing need for more and cleaner energy solutions in ways that are economically, environmentally, and socially responsible. We have expertise in exploration, production, refining and marketing of oil and natural gas, and the manufacturing and marketing of chemicals.

As a global energy company operating in a challenging world, we set high standards of performance and ethical behaviors. We are judged by how we act and how we live up to our core values of honesty, integrity, and respect for people. Our Business Principles are based on these. • We’re creating a space where people with disabilities can excel through transparent recruitment process, workplace adjustments and ongoing support in their roles. Feel free to let us know about your circumstances when you apply, and we’ll take it from there.
  • We consider ourselves a flexible employer and want to support you finding the right balance. We encourage you to discuss this with us in your application.
