Overview
The Product Engineer drives the engineering development of components and assemblies within the Westport Fuel System. They will use innovative design approaches to develop creative solutions and improve product performance and reliability while working with suppliers to reduce system costs. This will include input to component level requirements, design failure modes and effects analysis, design reviews, and coordination of design activities. The Product Engineer will work closely with other engineers to develop various components and sub-systems from cryogenic (LNG) storage, high and low pressure gas storage / supply systems to on-engine fuel conditioning components including injectors, regulators, and valves.
Position Responsibilities:
Work within a cross-functional team to develop innovative components within a broad range of systems from cryogenic (LNG) high and low pressure liquid/gas storage to on-engine fuel systems by driving product development activities such as:
- Product development planning
- Component specification creation
- Justification of design proposals through engineering calculations, analysis, modelling, and creation of supporting engineering documentation
- Integration of Westport components and systems with various OEM vehicles and configurations
- Design reviews and continuous improvement activities
- Pre-production and production support
- Root cause analysis and problem solving
- Engineering Change Requests
- Promotion of components by ensuring they meet their technical requirements, following the Westport Product Development Process (WPDP)
- Design Verification Plan (DVP) definition
- Design optimization (Cost and quality improvements)
- Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
Other responsibilities include:
- Assisting in the creation of high quality production level drawing packages
- Providing mentorship to more junior product and design engineers
- Enrolling others in Westport’s vision
- Supporting development of test and assembly fixtures related to a given Westport product
Health & Safety Responsibilities:
- Promote Westport’s H&S culture by leading by example in relation to Environmental, H&S policies and procedures and understand your obligations and responsibilities as it relates to applicable H&S Acts and Regulations
- Immediately respond to, investigate and take action from reports of unsafe conditions and/or behaviors
- Enforce Westport’s H&S policies and procedures, encourage safe work practices, correct unsafe acts or conditions, conduct formal and informal workplace inspections
Position Requirements:
Key Requirements
- Experience conceptualizing and designing complex mechanical systems and assemblies interlinked by mechanical and fluid systems
- Ability to use Microsoft Office Products such as Word and Excel or equivalent software
- Knowledge of standard drawing practices including ASME Y14.5M or ISO Standards (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing [GD&T])
- Knowledge of properties of materials and manufacturing techniques
- Mechanical Engineering or similar degree
- Proven mechanical aptitude and understanding of fundamental mechanical engineering concepts
- A minimum of 6 years of experience in a Product Development or Design Engineering role
- Experience with product development processes such as Requirement Documentation, Verification and Validation Plans and Reports, and DFMEA’s
- Knowledge of fluid dynamics and heat transfer
- Ability to justify design decisions with calculations and written documentation
- Knowledge of 3D modeling and creation of 2D drawings using an industry recognized CAD software package (experience with PTC Creo is an asset)

Beneficial Experience:
- Experience with cryogenic design (pumping, sealing, vaporizing, and storage)
- Knowledge of thermodynamics and mechanical dynamics
- Proficient in BOM creation and management
- Experience with fuel injection systems
- Knowledge of statistical methods and data analysis
- General understanding of manufacturing processes and relevant design standards including NFPA-52, FMVSS-304, NGV, CSA, ISO, ECE-R110, ASME B&PV Section VIII
- Experience with fluid or gaseous seals
- Familiar with PTC Creo Parametric, Windchill, and Integrity
- Knowledge of materials compatible with natural gas (CNG/LNG), Diesel, Hydrogen
- Knowledge of Diesel engine basics
- Knowledge of FEA or fluid dynamic modeling is an asset
- Knowledge of APQP and PPAP processes
- Experience with heavy duty, rail, or automotive equipment design
- Experience with heavy duty, automotive, or mobile equipment design
