Senior Network Engineer (Continuous)

POSITION FUNCTION

The Senior Network Engineer is the specialist in the installation, configuration and administration of enterprise wireless/wired infrastructure for the organization.

KEY DUTIES

Working within the IT Operations team, the Senior Network Engineer will provide expert level support of the City’s networks, providing resolution to escalated technical issues and planning for future network technology design and implementation. The position has the responsibility to administer the enterprise corporate wireless/wired infrastructure.

Design, configure and deploy functional networks (LAN, WLAN, WAN); Research, identify and implement new and emerging technologies beneficial to the city’s IT environment; Work closely with the cybersecurity team to conduct security audits on the corporate network; Asset management for all network infrastructure equipment; Configure and install software, servers, routers and other network devices; Monitor network performance and integrity; Resolve issues escalated by the Services Desk and technical resources; Automate tasks and monitor their effectiveness.

Provide mentorship and specialist support for team members on technical issues and design concepts with an emphasis on those related to network technology; Communicate with users when needed to provide support; Maintain and update complete technical documentation; Identify and recommend organization-wide improvements to network performance, capacity and scalability; Create, oversee and test the City’s network disaster recovery plan.

Perform related duties as and when required.

INDEPENDENCE

Work is generated by annual objectives and budget, requests for service and system requirements or is assigned by supervisor.

Work is reviewed through discussions with supervisor and department meetings.

New initiatives, major projects, expenditures and policies are discussed with supervisor with recommendations.

Key Skills And Abilities

Understand and apply the techniques of network administration and architecture.

Design, plan and implement local and wide area networks.

Thorough understanding of communication protocols (mainly TCP/IP) and routing protocols (e.g. BGP, OSPF).

Understanding of network operating systems (Avaya, Extreme, Cisco IOS).

Understanding of network diagnostic, monitoring and analysis tools (e.g. SolarWinds network tools).

Understanding of access control models and network security.

Organizational and mentoring skills.

Conduct troubleshooting responsibility with well-developed problem-solving skills.

Prepare and present reports and internal training sessions.

Establish and maintain working relationships.

Qualifications

Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification

Undergraduate Degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field. (4 years)

Cisco Certified Network or Design Professional Certification or equivalent. (1 year)

Required to sign attestation of confidentiality.

Experience

6 years of related experience in network administration and architecture, including industry-related experience as a Senior Network Engineer or Network Administrator or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

OTHER

May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.

Work schedule Monday to Friday (35 hour work week)

$59.58 per hour, Pay Grade 19
