Summary

The SCIRE Community Project Assistant will work with Dr. Janice Eng and the Spinal Cord Injury Research Evidence (SCIRE) Community Research Coordinator on activities developed by the SCIRE Advisory Committee. SCIRE Community (www.scireproject.com/community) is a resource website for people living with spinal cord injury and their family and caregivers.

The primary activity of the Project Assistant is the creation, promotion and maintenance of the content on the SCIRE Community website in conjunction with the SCIRE webmaster and SCIRE Advisory Committee and other stakeholders. This includes initiatives to expand, evaluate and disseminate the content, whether this be by traditional research methods, social media, videos, or by other innovative methods.

The Project Assistant will work closely with the SCIRE Community Research Coordinator and will interact with other stakeholders including individuals with spinal cord injury and their family and caregivers, as well as clinicians who might want to refer their patients to the site. Under the direction of Dr. Eng and the Research Coordinator, the Project Assistant will undertake a variety of activities to develop and showcase content and carry out new dissemination strategies, defined and developed in conjunction with the SCIRE Advisory Committee. This can include the development of short video vignettes hosted on the website to illustrate aspects of care, development and production of promotional materials for dissemination at conferences and other local, national and international meetings, and developing marketing initiatives to increase website traffic.

Organizational Status

The candidate will work under the direction of Dr. Janice Eng (Professor, UBC Department of Physical Therapy) and the SCIRE Community Research Coordinator. In addition, input and direction from the SCIRE Advisory Committee is received on a monthly basis via teleconference. The position is located at the Rehabilitation Research Program at the GF Strong Rehab Centre.

Work Performed

The candidate will receive training. After training, he/she will work on the SCIRE Community project.

Under general supervision, the candidate will:

  • Create content/communications products and information dissemination strategies consistent with project goals (i.e., evidence-based information).
  • Promote and market the website at conferences, research and consumer meetings, including managing Social Media accounts for the SCIRE Community Project, so that our communities of users (Clinicians, Researchers, Students/Trainees, Policy-Makers, Consumers and Families) remain engaged and visit the website regularly.
  • Develop media/materials to disseminate research to clinicians (knowledge translation).
  • Perform literature searches and data extraction.
  • Develop, manage, and maintain the SCIRE Community website.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Failure to successfully manage and promote SCIRE Community could result in a loss of credibility with respect to the SCIRE Website from stakeholders (people living with spinal cord injury, clinicians), and potential difficulties in acquiring renewal funding for the project.

Supervision Received

The candidate will be supervised by Dr. Janice Eng, Professor, Department of Physical Therapy and the SCIRE Community Research Coordinator. Dr. Eng is off-site regularly while the SCIRE Community Research Coordinator is on-site.

Supervision Given

The candidate may oversee and direct the work of 1 or 2 UBC work-learn students.

Preferred Qualifications

High School graduation.Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline or graduation from a technical college or institute. A University/college degree in a program related to web-development, marketing, exercise, rehabilitation, disability or fitness is preferred.Minimum of 2 years related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
