Job Summary
The position is for a full-time research assistant working in a cell biology laboratory whose focus is the physiology and pathophysiology of human and mammalian tendons. The laboratory is headed by Dr Alex Scott, and is based in the Centre for Hip Health and Mobility, Robert Ho Research Centre, Vancouver Coastal Health and Research Institute.
Organizational Status
The research assistant reports directly to Dr Alex Scott, Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy.
Work Performed
Designs, modifies and performs complex experiments and systems and/or uses technically advanced procedures and conducts complex analysis and interpretation of experiments pertaining to tendon physiology and biomechanics designed in conjunction with the PI.
Co-develops and do-authors novel protocols for the study of tendon physiology.
Manages and oversees the daily operations of the laboratory including large purchase recommendations.
Provides instruction and training in the use of specialized techniques and equipment in the laboratory to graduate students and new employees.
Researches and determines the applicability of new technology and systems related to work.
Co-authors scientific papers and assists in writing grant applications.
Supervises, schedules and trains laboratory staff and may make recommendations with respect to hiring and providing input into staff performance.
Exercises a considerable amount of judgment, responsibility, and initiative in determining work procedures and methods, and coordinating the work of the laboratory.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Exercises independent scientific judgement on how to minimize experimental error and equipment failure. Responsible for daily, weekly, and monthly planning of experimental workflow for maximum efficiency and minimal waste of laboratory resources. Maintains a laboratory notebook of all experiments, including those considered to have failed due to experimental error. In case of serious or ongoing errors, position will be subject to termination.
Supervision Received
The Research Assistant will receive direction from Dr Alex Scott. All experiments will be conducted collaboratively and with Dr Scott’s knowledge and consent. Works under minimum supervision, receiving specific instructions only on unusual problems or on matters which depart significantly from established policy and procedure.
Supervision Given
May have supervisory responsibilities for a small group of employees or students at lower classifications and may have input into staff selection and performance evaluation, and collaborative input into student projects.
Minimum Qualifications
University degree in relevant discipline or completion of a technical program and a minimum five years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Some positions may require a graduate degree.
Preferred Qualifications
PhD in biomechanics or related discipline. Documented history of scholarly productivity in the field of tendon tissue mechanics, preferably through published manuscripts.
