Description:

The Department of Microbiology & Immunology at the University of British Columbia is seeking a highly qualified Research Associate in "tuberculosis pathogenesis and drug discovery", under the supervision of Dr. Jim Sun. This position is fully grant-funded and will primarily consist of research and lab management duties. The Sun Lab (https://thesunlab.ca) uses multidisciplinary approaches to study host immunity to pathogens, macrophage biology, host-directed therapies, antimicrobial drug development, wastewater surveillance, and cancer therapeutics. The position is a full-time, 2-year appointment, with the possibility for renewal subject to funding availability and job performance. The anticipated start date is January 1, 2024.

Requirements:

Applicants must have a PhD in microbiology, cell biology, immunology, or a closely related field, and a strong record of research accomplishments and publications. Applicants must also have a demonstrated ability to develop, lead and perform research projects to completion, work effectively both independently and in a team environment, and must possess strong verbal and written communication skills. At least 3 years of relevant postdoctoral research experience is preferred. Applicants should be experienced in all the following:

Microbiological and biochemical techniques:

• High-throughput screening assays (fluorescence and luminescence based)
• Willingness to work in CL3 conditions is required; prior experience is an asset
• Molecular genetics including cloning, targeted gene deletion and overexpression
• Quantitative real-time PCR methods
• Bacterial culture and genetics

Cellular and immunology techniques

• Drug target identification and validation
• Omics technologies (e.g. epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics)
• Multi-color flow cytometry, ELISA, Western blotting
• Widefield and confocal microscopy
• Mammalian cell culture and genetics including primary cell culture, PBMC isolation, CRISPR methods, cell transfection and transduction, and bacterial infections
• In vivo animal models (pathogen infections is an asset)

Laboratory management and administration

• Lab organization: purchasing, shipping, equipment maintenance, inventories, website maintenance
• Training and mentoring students
• Manuscript and grant writing, protocol development (biosafety, animal, REB)

Duties may include:

The successful candidate will be expected to lead, develop, and carry out research projects in an independent manner, while managing, maintaining, and organizing key laboratory operations and infrastructure. They are expected to assist with the training and mentoring of postdoctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate students, and contribute to the development of research proposals, manuscript preparations, and conference presentations.

Compensation:

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The minimum annual salary for this position is $66,924 and is eligible for benefits.
