The Michael Smith Laboratories at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver invites applications for a Research Associate position in genomics to join the laboratory of Dr. Marco Marra. The successful candidate will work with a dynamic interdisciplinary team of scientists and trainees in the areas of genomics, cancer genomics and precision medicine.

Applicants are expected to have completed their PhD in a relevant discipline such as Genome Sciences, Genetics, or Biochemistry, and have at least five years of experience in a closely related research field, such as cancer research. The Research Associate is required to have experience in molecular, cell biology and genomics techniques and methodologies using cutting edge technologies, and be expert in mammalian cell and tissue culture, drug screening and gene knock out / knock down technologies (eg CRISPR, shRNA, siRNA). They will have demonstrated experience in translating research outputs for consumption, both in writing (e.g. manuscripts) and orally (e.g. conference presentations). Experience in grant writing is an asset, as is experience with model organisms.

The Research Associate position is lab-based and of fundamental importance to a range of projects, with opportunities to learn new skills and contribute to genomics and cancer research directly and indirectly. The Research Associate will contribute to projects by developing data collection strategies, collecting data, advising on the design of experiments, and providing guidance to the interpretation and analysis of research results. Projects will have a strong collaborative component with both other internal and external academic teams.

Interested applicants should submit a letter of application that highlights their experience, detailed curriculum vitae including a list of publications, and contact details for 3 references. Application materials should be submitted no later than the posting end date.

This position will begin ASAP. This is a full-time term appointment subject to annual renewal. Salary will commensurate with qualifications and experience.

UBC hires on the basis of merit and is committed to employment equity. Equity and diversity are essential to academic excellence. An open and diverse community fosters the inclusion of voices that have been underrepresented or discouraged. Inclusion is built by individual and institutional responsibility through continuous engagement with diversity to inspire people, ideas, and actions for a better world. We encourage applications from members of groups that have been marginalized on any grounds enumerated under the B.C. Human Rights Code, including sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, racialization, disability, political belief, religion, marital or family status, age, and/or status as a First Nation, Métis, Inuk, or Indigenous person. In assessing applications, UBC recognizes the legitimate impact that leaves (e.g., parental leave, leave due to illness) can have on a candidate’s record of research achievement. These leaves will be taken into careful consideration during the assessment process.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority, and members of historically marginalized groups will be given special consideration.
