Job Description

Rail Signal Engineer

Toronto, ON

TECHNICAL SKILLS:

Ø Demonstrating a high degree of initiative, and resourcefulness in solving problems.

Ø Good understanding of SelTrac signal plans and SelTrac Radio equipment.

Ø Demonstrating an advanced level of logical reasoning resulting in effective hardware application designs, products and processes.

Ø Interpreting, identifying, and documentation of requirements such that customer needs are met within the budget and schedule constraints.

Ø Ability to assemble components into enclosures to optimize room footprints.

Ø Formulating or contributing to the development of new designs.

Ø Implementing designs using good design practice and applicable AREMA and CENELEC standards and guidelines.

Ø Devising and running tests to verify functionality, and identifying and solving problems.

Ø Power distribution design knowledge for rail deployment is an asset.

Ø Preparing material specifications for hardware and/or software components.

Ø Proficient with the use of development tools, CAD packages (MicroStation, AutoCAD, AutoCAD electrical)

Ø Selection of components that optimize MTBF of assemblies.

Ø Creation of project documentation and interface with Consortium members, technical customer staff and various other stake holders.

Ø To ensure both the safety and quality of hardware products while reducing the deployment cost of those products. To contribute to the heightened reuse of product hardware and contribute to improvements in hardware quality.

MANAGEMENT SKILLS:

Ø Planning departmental activities on one or multiple projects by using the appropriate management tools to define and schedule the tasks.

Ø Identifying, organizing and managing the resources (staff, services, and supplies) required to achieve project goals.

Ø Developing cost and time estimates for new or proposed programs, including an assessment of foreseeable risks.

Ø Ensuring that assigned projects proceed according to schedule, within budget, and in accordance with all requirements. This includes revising plans and forecasts as required to accommodate changes in circumstances.

Ø Administrative tasks such as approving timesheets, vacation requests and assisting in the selection, appraisal, and evaluation of staff.

Ø Carry out all assigned work efficiently with a minimum of supervision, and in accordance with company and departmental processes.

COMMUNICATIONS SKILLS:

Ø Well developed verbal skills to interact effectively and professionally in a variety of forums

Ø Good interpersonal and diplomatic skills to deal confidently, courteously, and correctly with people at any level within the organization, and the customer.

Ø Well developed writing skills to prepare effective reports, documents, etc. in a clear and concise format.

Ø The ability to present the department's position and effectively represent its interests.

SOFT SKILLS:

Ø Ability to work in a team environment.

Ø Mentor junior or new members of the department.

Ø Maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the job and in relations with others.


APTITUDE:

Ø Locating and researching source documentation for design activities.

Ø Making timely decisions, both independently and in concert with others.

Ø Identify problems or inefficiencies in the department's operation and suggest improvements.

Ø Develop and maintain a highly motivated project team.

Ø Promote a harmonious working relationship among group members.

Ø Present effective solutions to problems or inefficiencies in the department's operation.

Ø Make timely decisions, both independently and in concert with others, after a thorough evaluation of all relevant factors.

Ideally you should have:

Ø Bachelors or Masters in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent engineering degree

Ø 15+ years related work experience in the rail industry specifically in hardware signaling design

Ø Computer literate with knowledge of CAD tools (MicroStation, AutoCAD), Bills of Materials, (SAP), Configuration Management, and Microsoft Office suite.

Ø Good interpersonal and technical writing skills
