Designer
We’re looking for a Designer to join our team! This special role will empower you to have a hand in how our cities develop and create more little homes to help solve our housing crisis. You’ll get to be part of a small tight knit team that works hard, is passionate about housing solutions and has fun building a future we can all believe in!
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will report directly to the Lead Designer and will be responsible for:
- Managing each project through the municipal permitting process
- Assemble detail packages for interior and exterior details, by using existing resources and your own experience/knowledge of building design and construction
- Participate in the improvement and evolution of the Smallworks standard building practices
- Complete design (whole building & some interiors) of infill and laneway homes from client onboarding to construction
- Self-managing a workload of several projects, while creating a working relationship with clients through the full design process
- Regularly consult with key Smallworks personnel and trades/consultants
- Preparing construction drawings and participating in the construction process to resolve site issues, perform site walkthroughs and maintain client relations
Participate in regular meetings with the design team and Lead Designer to discuss all projects, track project progress, and identify any challenges or obstacles that may arise.
Qualifications
Crucial Skills for this Role:
- Great listening and communication skills
- A post-secondary education in Architecture, Architectural Design or a related field
- A passion to learn about efficient, elegant small home design and space planning
- Ability to problem solve calmly, with excellent time management, multi-tasking and prioritization skills
- A willingness to create professional working relationships with clients and colleagues
Handy Skills for this Role:
- Experience working with Part 9 Buildings
- Knowledge of a range of residential design and construction details, including wood frame construction detailing and building panelization
- Understanding of municipal by-laws and codes including VBBL, BCBC, Vancouver’s Laneway House By-Law and Infill Guidelines
- Experience with Sketchup
- Experience with Vectorworks
- Knowledge of basic Building Science concepts
Compensation:
Base salary commensurate with experience.
