Job Purpose
The incumbent provides advanced technical advice and support in the area of automation to manufacturing plants across Canada on engineering solutions, services, and project development for execution at the plant level.
Key Duties & Responsibilities (80% project identification & development/20% technical support)
- Identify and provide advice on the most appropriate technology, equipment, and methodology for improvements to manufacturing operations based on the incumbents’ areas of expertise and the objectives of the division.
- Where applicable, safely manage external human resources such as vendors and contractors by providing appropriate safety training and awareness.
- Collaborate with the team to review HMI design, process implementation & Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
- Promote excellence in all activities, including the functional groups, to support safe operation, optimal quality, improved reliability and productivity, waste reduction and cost improvement.
- Ensure all project specifications and implementations comply with company project management procedures and with all governing practices, codes, and regulations.
- Define project scope, targets, and deliverables for significant projects in their area of expertise. Design and prepare plans, specifications, and cost estimates (includes material and Labour). This includes performing the applicable research for project design requirements and calculations. Gain appropriate approvals from management and stakeholders.
- Upon approval of the project, communicate project expectations to project management team at the plant and keep stakeholders informed of the status. Support Project Engineering team at the plant level with advice and guidance where necessary, through to completion.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities for improvement in safety, quality, reliability, cost, and customer service and reduce equipment failures to preserve asset value.
- Prepare and evaluate contracts and agreements. Proactively monitor changes within the project scope, identify potential barriers, and devise contingency plans.
- Maintain awareness to modern technologies as they relate to efficiency improvements, cost reductions and workplace safety and product quality enhancements.
Education & Experience
- For automation specialization only - college diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Robotics & Automation, Mechatronics or Equivalent.
- B.Sc. in Engineering (preferably Mechanical, Electrical)
- Minimum five (5) years’ experience performing a similar role is required.
- Experience in change, troubleshoot, and develop processes, such as CIP systems, pasteurization systems, sterilizers, etc. is an asset.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Autonomy and Communication Skills
- Electrical, mechanical, and programming skills
- Understanding of utilities and energy risk management
- Electrical Knowledge
- Knowledge of AutoCAD
- Understanding of Dairy processes
- Knowledge of Rockwell, Siemens, or any other PLC programming Languages.
- Strong electrical and mechanical troubleshooting skills
- Good communicator, listener, and presenter
- Fluent in English
- Proficiency in English, French, or both.
- Eager to learn and share knowledge with proven ability to work in a team environment with all levels of personnel in the organization
- Ability to design, develop, and build solutions using AutoCAD, Solid works, and/or 3D Printing.
- Some experience in an engineering, electrical/mechanical or technical capacity in an automated manufacturing environment, familiarity with multi axis robots
- Must be willing to travel domestically and internationally (on occasion)
- Strong analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills
- Ability to adapt to changing culture/environments
