THE ROLE
The role of the Product Designer is crucial for overseeing the development and creation of lighting products. The selected candidate will play a pivotal role in the product design and development process, ensuring that the company's lighting products meet quality, functionality, and aesthetic standards that are aligned with Liteline’s overall business goals and objectives. This includes understanding market trends, customer needs, and technological advancements in the lighting industry.
Reporting to the Director of Engineering, the Product Designer will be responsible for:
- Ensuring that all design-related documentation, including specifications, drawings, and technical documents, are periodically validated and maintained up to date in the project folder.
- Ensuring that projects are completed within the allocated resources and timeframes.
- Creating product specification sheets based on in-house test results.
- Collaborating with other departments, such as R&D, Marketing, and Manufacturing, to ensure seamless integration of design with production processes and alignment with market needs.
- Overseeing the creation of prototypes to validate product performance, durability, and user experience.
- Overseeing product development process from an engineering perspective, starting with ideation to prototyping and final production. This involves coordinating with various stakeholders, such as Marketing, Manufacturing, Product Development, Co-Presidents, and Sales teams.
- Ensuring that all lighting products meet high-quality standards, safety regulations, and industry certifications.
- Conducting regular design reviews to assess progress, provide feedback, and make necessary adjustments to meet project goals and requirements.
- Testing prototypes from a fit and form perspective to ensure project scope requirements are met.
- Using project management principles and tools to plan, track, and report on the progress of product design projects.
- Encouraging innovation and continuous improvement in product design by staying up to date with industry trends, conducting market research, and identifying new technologies or materials that can enhance product performance and efficiency.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Familiarity with design thinking methodologies and human-centered design principles.
- Excellent communication skills to liaise with cross-functional teams, stakeholders, and suppliers.
- Strong analytical skills to identify and address design challenges and make data-driven decisions.
- Solid knowledge of lighting standards and regulations, including safety and efficiency requirements (UL, CSA, ESTAR, DLC, CEC).
- Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) software and other design tools commonly used in the industry.
- Bachelor's or Master's in Industrial Design, Product Design, Engineering, or a related field.
- Relevant work experience in product design and development, preferably in the lighting industry or a related sector.
- Proactive attitude towards staying up to date with the latest advancements in lighting technology and design trends.
- Strong understanding of lighting technology, components (LEDs, LED drivers, and lighting controls), and manufacturing processes.
- A creative and innovative mindset to drive new product ideas and improvements to existing products.
- Project management skills to oversee the product development lifecycle and ensure deadlines are met.
- Ability to present product concepts and design proposals effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to provide guidance and direction to the manufacturers, fostering collaboration and creativity.
- Willingness to adapt designs based on feedback, testing, and market research.
