Your role
Ontario Today is the province’s most listened to noon show. Based in Ottawa, the show connects people from all over the province, with its call-in format giving our audience an opportunity to directly engage with each other and the CBC. The show tackles issues that aim to challenge and inform, with a goal of driving conversation and respectful debate. The show offers a diverse range of stories and perspectives and values accountability, but also isn’t shy about having fun. It has a mandate to cover Ontario politics and priorities, and reflect this huge province in all its diversity.
As the potential producer of the show, you have a track record of making great radio. You are loaded with your own story ideas and you can recognize someone else’s good idea when you hear it. You're ready to make sure diverse audiences hear themselves in our programming, and to reach out to people who may not already be tuning in.
You also understand how to engage an audience and encourage their participation. You’re an excellent problem solver and collaborator. And, most of all, you’re not afraid of the pressure (and thrill) of producing a live, hour-long call-in show where the unexpected is the norm.
Key Tasks
  • Under the direction of the Managing Editor, conceives and develops content ideas and concepts and is involved in the preparation of production objectives and scheduling of content.
  • Adheres to the principles outlined in CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.
  • Exercises editorial responsibility as delegated by Management.
  • Supports team development and ongoing staff feedback.
  • Builds strong working relationships with CBC journalists across Ontario.
  • Exercises strong news judgment, responding to breaking news and making news with an eye to contributing to other shows and platforms.
  • Develops content including assigning, researching, gathering, writing and/or editing.
  • Directs a fast-paced open line show, screening calls to provide balance and variety of interesting perspectives.
As Required, Performs The Following Tasks
  • Assigns, chases, and vets stories.
  • Writes and/or edit scripts and audio.
  • Directs talent and sound.
  • Identifies, develops and maintains contacts relevant to the show.
  • Screens calls from listeners, quickly and respectfully.
We Are Looking For a Candidate With The Following
  • Ability to make decisions under constant deadline pressure.
  • Solid journalistic skills, with highly developed writing for broadcast and vetting skills.
  • Able to keep track of a number of simultaneous activities; to plan and prioritize; to analyze complex journalistic and operational issues.
  • Strong leadership skills, with the demonstrated ability to be self-directed while managing a small team.
  • Strong understanding of Ontario politics, as well as federal and municipal affairs.
  • A keen eye and ear for stories and story development in terms of both news and current affairs.
  • Strong understanding of audio editing.
  • Highly developed production skills.
  • Excellent analytical skills plus excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated curiosity in range of perspectives, including a commitment to inclusive newsgathering.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience.
  • University degree or equivalent.
