Position Summary
We are seeking a Process/Mechanical Engineer Lead that will be responsible for the mechanical and piping design engineering group of approximately 15 employees, engineering and management of mechanical engineering projects involving piping systems, pressure vessels, tanks, pumps, HVAC systems and other mechanical equipment. Oversee the coordination of design details within the context of a multidisciplinary design team and provide technical assistance to clients for mechanical engineering matters. The work will be for operating industrial facilities across multiple markets. The position shall ensure the safe and economical operation of various projects.
Other responsibilities include:
- Assisting with the development of project plans, project costing and coordinating the efforts of other engineers, designers, and drafters to support cross-functional collaboration.
- Acting as project manager on select mechanical engineering projects.
- Responsible for inspecting project sites to collect information, performing project walk-throughs with contractors and owners.
- Overseeing the planning, design, and estimation of cost for client projects.
- Providing feedback and advice regarding the technical and mechanical aspects of client projects to management and other project leaders.
- Creating and implementing standard specifications and procedures for mechanical engineering projects.
- Managing manpower to budget, resourcing to jobs, working with managers and human resources to adjust team size as may be required from time to time.
- Improving operations, reducing turnaround times, and optimizing processes to provide seamless quality of engineering services.
- Effectively managing the Mechanical Engineering groups Projects, adhering to budgets, timelines, and key deliverables.
- Performing engineering design work and recommending improvements.
- Maintaining existing client relationships while developing new client opportunities.
- Ensuring ongoing compliance with local, national, and international standards (where applicable) and legislation.
- Actively working to maintain a positive culture, team morale, and employee engagement.
- Supervising the work of Engineers in Training.
- Acting as stamping and checking engineer for other projects.
- Establishing design schedules and monitoring the progress of various projects and their conformance to design schedules.
- Collaborating with other departments spanning multiple disciplines (e.g., Shop Floor, Purchasing, etc.) in a clear manner, ensuring project success.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
- Creating and reviewing technical documentation, including P&IDs, general arrangements, construction work packages, technical reports, and other engineering documentation.
Our Ideal Candidate
- Able to apply the right mathematical methods and formulas to problem solving.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Canadian and local Engineering Codes and Standards, such as OH&S, ASME B31.1, ASME B31.3, ASME Section VIII Div. 1, CSA B149, CSA Z662, API 12F, API 650 and Alberta Fire Code.
- Ability to interpret and implement company policies and procedures.
- PPMP is considered an asset.
- Able to communicate ideas and recommendations to non-technical team members in a clear manner.
- Project Engineering experience is preferable with significant experience in consulting or project engineering.
- High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office productivity suite.
- Strong problem identification and problem resolution skills.
- Practical experience with piping design and construction work package development.
- Strong work ethic and positive team attitude.
- Working knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety as it pertains to your team and any sub-consultant/sub-contractor you or your team chooses to contract.
- Registered as a P. Eng. with APEGA.
- Process Engineering experience is recommended.
- Participates in professional and local industry events raising ONECs profile in the community.
- Excellent time management and project management skills.
- 5-10 years of Mechanical Engineering with Process Engineering experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering is required.
- Working knowledge of risk analysis and relevant legislation.
- Multi-provincial and territory registrations may be required.
- Sound and independent judgment and reasoning.
- Demonstrated understanding of engineering theories and principles, and how they can be practically and effectively applied to solve problems.
- Highly motivated and self-directed.
