Process Safety Engineer Jobs

The Opportunity:

Canadian Natural has an exciting opportunity for two (2) Process/Technical Safety Engineers to join our team. In this role, you will have the opportunity to participate and lead the Technical/Process Safety and loss prevention activities supporting the Process Safety Management (PSM) for the business.The ideal candidates would possess significant experience and demonstrated performance with process engineering principles in Projects as well as within an Operating asset.In this role the candidate would experience training and world class Process Safety methods, career development opportunities, progression & growth, recognition and sense of accomplishment through making a difference, empowered to contribute to improve hazard identification and risk management processes and ways of working and mentoring others for competence development

Key Accountabilities:

• Lead Continuous Improvement with leak management through LOPC analysis, management review and improvement plans.Focal point for LOPC classification, analysis and continuous improvement. Conduct monthly analysis and reporting of all LOPC’s and work collaboratively to develop continuous improvement plans
• Lead the identification of Process Hazards and Major Accident Hazard risks using HAZID
• Lead the implementation of Process Safety Management Systems
• Develop technical reports documenting the results from studies and assessments
• Support the MOC process through risk assessments and Process Hazard Analysis
• Effectively communicate the results from Process Hazard Analysis to the responsible managers as well as the Front Line organizations
• Lead and participate in Risk Assessments using FMEA & LOPA including the SIL classification for Safety Instrumented Functions
• Lead and participate in Root Cause Analysis for the investigation of Process Safety incidents
• Lead and/or participate in process safety field inspections
• Lead and participate in Process Hazard Analysis including Hazop, What-If, Checklists and FMEA’s
• Support the implementation of the company/industry Process Safety & Fire Protection standards
• Conduct Facility Siting studies using QRA, Consequence Modelling and CFD analysis based on API RP 752, API RP 753 and industry good practice
• Perform Consequence modelling using PHAST or FRED supporting Process Safety risk assessments.Develop consequence models for simple and complex problems and scenarios supporting risk assessments
• Lead the identification of Safety Critical Equipment and performance criteria for major accident hazard risks in Projects and Operations

Other Details:

• Work schedule: 4x3 – Monday to Thursday, 10 hours per shift
• This is a safety sensitive position
• Occasional travel to Calgary is expected with this role
• Job location: Horizon Upgrader in Fort McMurray Alberta

Skills & Qualifications:

• Applying industry good practice with Loss Prevention including API and NFPA Fire Protection and Loss Prevention standards and guidelines
• Safety in Design and the key Technical Safety Engineering deliverables identified and applied through the various project phases of a major project.Previous project experience is expected
• Significant experience and demonstrated capabilities with:
• Demonstrates a strong commitment to the creation of value with all aspects of work delivery
• Qualitative and Quantitative risk assessments methodologies including LOPA, Fault and Event Trees and FMEA
• Leading and participating in Root Cause Analysis for the investigation of Process Safety Incidents
• Strong working knowledge of Asset Management Systems in managing Process Safety Risk
• Applying and leading process safety risk management and hazard analysis techniques in an project and/or operating environment including; HAZOP, LOPA, FMEA, Fault Tree
• Post-secondary degree from a recognized university, ideally in Chemical Engineering with professional development certifications in Process Safety Management or Fire Protection Engineering
• Developing and leading the Safety in Design scope of deliverables in FEED and Detailed Design phase for capital projects
• 7+ years of engineering experience directly supporting Projects and/or Operating facilities in a Technical Safety Engineering or Process Safety Engineering role.
• Leading the implementation of Process Safety Management systems
• Applying the requirements of API 520, API 521, API 526, API 620, API 650 and API 2000 for Over Pressure and Under pressure protection in design and operations
• Strongly motivated and committed to continuous improvement in Process Safety Performance
• Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills. Skilled in the development of reports and presentations.Effective communicator who can influence key stakeholders
• Consequence modeling and Quantitative Risk Assessment including Facility Siting studies based on API RP 752, API RP 753 and industry best practices. Experience with Aermod/ADMS and CFD modeling is a benefit
• API 754 and the classification of Process Safety Events. Experience with leading Tier 3 LOPC management initiatives and identifying Tier 4 Management System Metrics
• Functional safety and applying the principles of IEC 61511 in developing the Safety Requirements Specification
• SCE management systems and the identification and Operationalization of the integrity assurance activities for Safety Critical Equipment
• Licensed to practice with APEGA in Alberta
• Strong working knowledge of Risk and Reliability methodologies including RCM and RBI and API RP 581
• HAZID and the identification of Major Accident Hazards
