The Opportunity
Our Canada Gas Process Safety Team is currently looking to add a Process Safety Engineer to the team, based in Calgary, AB.
Reporting to the Process Safety Lead for Canada Gas Engineering, the Process Safety Engineer will lead safety related incident investigations and coordinate process safety activities including process hazard analyses (PHA).
What You'll Do
Incident Management
  • Complete investigation reports and present investigation results to leadership and across the business unit, as needed
  • Support business unit with root cause training and use of enterprise incident management software
  • Classify, investigate and communicate process safety events and lessons learned
  • Support analyzing incident data for trends and improvement opportunities
  • Support emergency responses to process safety events
  • Lead root cause analysis investigations and drive corrective/preventive actions across the organization
Process Safety Engineering
  • Coach & mentor business unit leadership and personnel on process safety topics (PHA, MOC, PSSR, Bowties, etc.) with training, education, and informal interactions
  • Support regulatory event submissions and information requests
  • Lead and coordinate appropriate process hazard analyses (PHA’s), such as What-If, Checklists, Hazard and Operability (HAZOP), Layer of Protection analysis (LOPA) Study and Bow-Tie Analysis
  • Track and maintain corrective actions stemming from facility PHAs, incident investigations and assessments
  • Support business unit Risk Management Plans and provide technical support for preventative / mitigative controls
  • Provide advice and recommendations on the applicability and interpretation of both internal and external process safety guidelines and standards
  • Provide oversight and periodic review of management of change (MOC) practices, participate in MOCs as process safety expert and provide recommendations for improving MOC conformance.
  • Participate in company process safety technical networks
  • Develop and monitor key performance indicators to track process safety progress
  • Effectively communicate and conduct process safety training (e.g., PHA) as needed
Minimum Qualifications
  • Registered, or eligible to register, as a Professional Engineer (P. Eng) with APEGA in good standing
  • Working knowledge of industry codes, standards and practices relevant to process design and safety (e.g., CSA, ASME, API, NFPA, ANSI, etc.) and Recognized and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practices (RAGAGEP)
  • Proven experience leading safety related investigation using a variety of Root Cause Analysis methodologies (e.g., TapRoot, 5-Why, etc.)
  • 6 years of Pipelines, oil & gas or petrochemical experience
  • Proven experience with and understanding of risk scenario development techniques, including assignment of probabilities and consequences
  • Experienced and competent in facilitating Process Hazard Analysis using a variety of methodologies (e.g., Hazard Identification (HAZID), PHAs (What-if, HAZOP, LOPA, Bowtie analyses).
  • Post-Secondary Degree in Chemical, Process or Mechanical Engineering
  • Proven ability to read & interpret P&ID’s, pressure equipment data sheets, and other integrity related documents
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with MOC processes and evaluating change
  • Experience with process safety key performance indicators
  • Experience developing Safe Work Practices
  • Experience in Design, commissioning, start-up and operation of oil & gas, or chemical facilities
  • Experience with the utilization of consequence modelling tools (e.g., DNV PHAST)
  • Experience with overpressure protection system design and evaluations
This position requires candidates to:
