Job Description
Under the supervision of the Manager of Mechanical Engineering, the Mechatronics/Mechanical Engineer is responsible for designing, prototyping, characterizing, and validating microfluidic systems and mechanical components of both the consumable and measuring instrument. The Mechatronic/ Mechanical Engineer will also be responsible for developing the associated manufacturing processes and provide critical input for the development of manufacturing equipment.
The successful candidate will participate in all phases of design projects including requirements decomposition, design preparations, supporting analysis, material selection and specification, engineering execution, verifications and validations.
This role is also responsible for liaison with internal and external partner design teams to ensure effective and efficient concurrent design, that organically integrates all elements of the point of care blood analysis system, including chemical sensors, fluidic system and the measuring instrument.
Duties And Responsibilities
  • Assist in the preparation of 510k and/or other regulatory applications
  • Interpret and translate engineering product documentation (i.e., assembly drawings, engineering BOMs, 3D CAD models) into manufacturing documentation and work instructions
  • Work within a project team environment and coordinate work with other project disciplines
  • Create/modify jigs and fixtures to facilitate product testing
  • Draft and execute study plans, verification/validation protocols and drive the release of the corresponding reports
  • Work independently and make technical decisions
  • Contribute design for manufacturing and assembly (DfM/A) feedback to manufacturing group
  • Participate in construction of the design history file and device master record
  • Investigate and troubleshoot technical related problems
  • Manage project scope and ensure quality and objectives are met
  • Maintain and organize all project-related documentation (drawings, studies, specifications, vendor data, code, etc.)
  • Participate in the requirements gathering, design, calculations, material sourcing, prototyping, characterization, product development, and development of scalable manufacturing processes for specific parts and equipment related to projects
  • Create/modify detailed 3D part and assembly drawings of products in CAD (SolidWorks)

Skills & Qualifications (Education And Experience)
  • Skill in the use of CAD, SolidWorks preferred
  • Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Hands-on approach to product development
  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Mechatronics/Mechanical Engineering, or related disciplines
  • Skill in use of Arduino/C++/Python
  • Experience in microfluidics, thermal systems, optical/vision systems, injection molding, and current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) all considered as strong assets
  • Strong ability to make timely and informed design decisions based on sound reasoning and supporting data
  • Strong verbal communication skills
  • Strong technical writing skills
  • Strong data analysis, mathematical modelling and computer skills
  • 2 years of relevant post-secondary experience doing mechanical design work considered an asset
  • Experience in the medical device industry considered an asset
  • Must be legally allowed to work in Canada
