Compensation Range


$7,278.33 - $11,372.33 CAD Monthly

Job Summary


The Manager, Communications & Engagement is responsible for identifying, implementing, overseeing and evaluating comprehensive, university-wide communications and engagement strategies and initiatives.


In collaboration with senior leaders and colleagues in the VP, Human Resources (VPHR) portfolio, and across the institution, this role ensures that strategies and initiatives reinforce and maintain the University’s mission, values, and culture and contribute towards an outstanding work environment.


The position establishes and oversees the development of communications and marketing initiatives to position UBC as a first-choice place to work, research and teach.


Organizational Status


Reporting to the Director, Workplace Strategy & Engagement, the Manager, Communications & Engagement is the primary strategic partner for communications and engagement within the VPHR portfolio. This position provides advice and consultation on communications methods, and is a senior member of the Workplace Strategy, Engagement and Communications unit within VP Human Resources.


This position will oversee communications professionals in the unit as well as provides guidance to other members of the unit.


This position will work in partnership with communications leaders and professionals and diverse stakeholders and colleagues across UBC, as well as external consultants and service providers. They also represent the VPHR Communications portfolio and contribute to working groups and committees related to institutional priorities, such as anti-racism, and emerging communications and engagement issues.


Work Performed


  • Is responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of communications strategies, plans, and campaigns for UBC’s employee experience initiatives throughout the employee lifecycle.
  • Collaborates with the wider UBC communications and marketing community including those in Faculties and VP units to ensure alignment and deliver results that positively influence the staff and faculty experience while promoting and safeguarding the University’s employer brand and reputation.
  • Develops, manages, and maintains communications and engagement project budgets.
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • Identifies and manages resources to execute projects, including external consultants and contractors.
  • Provides consultation and coaches senior leaders and colleagues across the VPHR portfolio on methods and practices related communications, employee engagement, and employer branding.
  • Advises and consults on the development and implementation of strategies and plans to communicate and advance UBC’s employer story (brand) internally and externally.
  • Develops, evaluates and reports on communication and engagement metrics, measurement and feedback to ensure objectives are achieved.
  • Identifies and initiates communications and engagement strategies that directly impact faculty and staff experiences at UBC, including Focus on People (UBC’s people strategy), the recruitment experience, the orientation and onboarding experience, learning, recognition, and how people create connections across the University.
  • Manages UBC-wide reputational communications and marketing projects and initiatives within the VP, HR portfolio, including national employer awards programs and internal recognition programs.
  • Consults on and Leads the development and implementation of communications plans for Collective Bargaining.
  • Leads the development of reports and presentations for VPHR-led strategies (such as Focus on People) for University wide audiences including UBC’s Board of Governors, the UBC Executive, and the broader UBC community.
  • Is responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of communications strategies, plans, and campaigns for UBC’s learning and talent development strategies and initiatives.
  • Oversees and provides guidance as it relates to digital communication initiatives, strategies and projects ensuring alignment and collaboration within the unit.
  • Provides guidance and consultation on strategic communications and engagement opportunities and initiatives with VPHR and across the University that contribute to the staff and faculty experiences.


Consequence of Error/Judgement


This position plays an important role in attaining the goals that have been committed to the University community in UBC’s Focus on People framework and the University’s strategic plan. Failure to lead the development and implementation engagement and communications strategies that align with the UBC’s current and future aspirations could have a detrimental effect on attracting and retaining outstanding faculty and staff and furthermore could impact the reputation of UBC.


Supervision Received


Reports to the Director, Workplace Strategy & Engagement. Works independently, utilizing broad concepts and exercising independent judgment and initiative in addressing complex issues. Keeps the Director informed of actions through reports and discussions. Exercises initiative and sound judgment in making decisions. Works closely with leaders and colleagues within the VPHR, as well as across the entire organization.


Supervision Given


Manages the Communications & Engagement Coordinator, the Digital Communication Strategist, and jointly, the Communications and Engagement Specialist (Benefits) as well as external consultants and other service providers, and student employees.


Minimum Qualifications


Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum seven years of related experience, or communication services, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
