Job Description
Position Overview
Our Underwriting professionals support our clients’ outsourcing underwriting business needs as it relates to analyzing and evaluating mortality and morbidity risk.
Reporting to the Director, Underwriting Operations, the Life Underwriter works with our clients in a production underwriting environment and is responsible for reviewing medical, occupational, financial and legal information to assess the risk on life, critical illness and disability insurance applications. The person in this role is expected to make quality decisions according to the underwriting principles, directives, and guidelines for our clients, solve problems and complete work assignments while adhering to time service expectations and any other established timelines.
Responsibilities
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide client support and assistance within their specifications and guidelines. Strive to be a problem solver, and advise management of potential problems or issues
  • Mortality/Morbidity Risk Analysis - determine appropriate underwriting requirements and assign cases to the appropriate risk category by analyzing and interpreting underwriting evidence for mortality and morbidity risk assessment
  • Demonstrate an ability to work productively in a high-pressure environment and effectively and proactively manage client deliverables
  • Provide value added underwriting service to advisors by coordinating cases for the insurers and reinsurers to ensure they have all the full underwriting evidence for a favourable outcome of the insurance decision and to help speed up the underwriting process
  • Communicate with clients, field offices, distributors, reinsurers, advisors, and client companies as required during the risk assessment process to develop a clear understanding of the case
  • Keep abreast of all changes in medical advances, attend medical and non-medical training seminars held in-house as well as outside courses designated by supervisor
  • Participate in internal committees and/or complete projects that impact the quality of the workplace or the work function
Requirements
Qualifications
  • Experience in all lines of business – Life, CI, DI
  • 3 years of individual Life underwriting experience
  • Have attained or working towards LOMA, FLMI or ALU designations
  • Conversant in insurance and reinsurance terminology
  • Achieved an individual life signing authority of at least $500K
  • Excellent verbal and written skills – communicating across, up, and down the reporting chain and to client companies
  • Industry involvement
  • Background in Health Sciences, Nursing, Kinesiology, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy
  • Bilingual French/English (oral and written) is required given the need to communicate orally and in writing with a predominantly English-speaking clientele based outside of Quebec.
