Position Summary

The Lead Effects TD provides support to FX crew members on a given show in order to achieve high quality effects elements. This position serves a role model and mentor for the FX department, with the objective of fostering a team environment, and producing high-quality imagery.

What You’ll Do

• Work under the guidance and direction of the Effects Supervisor and/or the VFX Supervisor
• Set a standard for all Technical Directors by continually improving the speed, quality of our work and adaptability
• Utilize pipeline scripting knowledge and ability to develop small scale, show specific tools for non-FX TDs and other FX TDs. Where appropriate, develop these into department level tools for cross-show use.
• Provide mentoring and training as needed for new hires and more junior team members
• With department Talent Manager, support talent related decisions and responsibilities including: recruitment, career development, employee morale and performance reviews
• Provides technical support to a team of FX TDs in achieving various effects for projects including FX animation, procedural simulation, dynamic simulation, particle and fluid systems
• Execute on look development and setup for FX simulations
• Support artists in troubleshooting issues related to shotwork or FX pipeline
• Guide FX crew working on shots to ensure that the Effects Supervisor's direction and level of quality is realized
• Work with the Effects Supervisor to trial and test new tools and workflows before and during shows
• Take on some shotwork for the project

What We’re Looking For

• Advanced simulation experience with Houdini
• At least 3 years experience in a Senior FX TD role
• Experience and interest in contributing to talent development for the FX department
• Demonstrates an excellent aesthetic eye, anticipating potential problems and using knowledge of how to use the tools to achieve the desired look
• At least 7 years relevant professional VFX experience and at least a college level diploma in computer graphics, fine arts, design, or photography, or related field; OR, at least 7 years relevant professional VFX experience. Demo reel required
• Ability to work with competency, energy and enthusiasm within a team environment
• Engages in the creative process without ego, with a positive and supportive attitude
• Demonstrates superb problem-solving skills and takes the initiative to offer ideas and suggestions
