Job Summary:

Main responsibilities include preparing and entering journal entries for the monthly accounting cycle including prepaid and capital entries, preparing Ontario Tech’s (OT) Management, the operational cash flow forecast, and other financial and operating reports for external stakeholders such as the Council of Financial Officers (COFO) and Statistics Canada to ensure both compliance with regulatory authorities and continued funding. This position is also responsible for preparing the tax return on behalf of the OT for Canada and the United States.


The FA is also responsible for gathering, analyzing, interpreting, and disseminating complex information required for the operation's annual budget and the operation's quarterly forecast processes and reporting these on a quarterly basis to OT’s Audit and Finance Committee.


In summary, the Financial Analyst position is responsible for decision support, evaluating business plans, translating strategic plans into financial scenarios, financial reporting, and presenting recommendations based on extensive analysis to internal and external stakeholders.


Nature of work:

Reporting to the Manager, Financial Reporting, this Financial Analyst (FA) is responsible for the financial management of administrative and faculty units through the provision of professional expertise in expense control and financial accounting. This expertise is used to assist in directing the resources of the University.


Responsibilities/accountabilities:

The Financial Analyst's responsibilities include:

  • Delivering professional financial guidance, leadership, education, and support to the University community including Directors and Managers of Planning and Operations, Finance and Administration Officers, and other senior University community members in the areas of: financial performance, budget and forecast reporting, accounting treatment, financial accountability
  • Developing, coordinating, and providing training and education sessions, as required, to the University community to enhance their ability to make sound financial decisions for their respective units.
  • Responsible for a portfolio of business units with a very high degree of complexity that requires an in-depth understanding and interpretation of different accounting principles and treatments.
  • Prepares accurate and complete financial reports for submission to internal and external organizations on a timely basis, including COFO, Internal Revenue Service reporting, Statistic Canada reporting, Ministry reporting, and Revenue Canada reporting.
  • Is an integral part of the Financial Reporting team to produce a monthly cash flow forecast for the university.
  • Oversees the monthly capital asset depreciation process, and performs year-over-year analysis of asset categories, and other assigned “income statement” accounts on a quarterly basis for reporting to Audit and Finance Committee.
  • Active participation in all special projects, including continuous process improvements, as assigned by the Director of Financial Planning and Reporting.
  • Prepares, reviews, and analyses the University has consolidated management reports with analysis of results to forecast and budget for reporting to the University’s Audit and Finance Committee.

Required Education:

  • Completion of a Master's degree or Undergraduate plus professional certification.
  • Candidates must have a post-secondary degree and a CPA (Certified Professional Accounting) designation.

Required Experience:

  • 2-4 years of financial reporting experience preferred.
  • Excellent financial modeling experience, preferably within a non-for-profit environment.
  • 3-5 years experience required
