Duties and Responsibilities:
Strategy and Leadership
  • Participates in Board strategic planning and updates orientation and policy manuals
  • Leads the organization in maintaining its focus on accomplishing the goals set out by the Board of Directors in a manner that inspires the confidence and trust of members, stakeholders, police agencies, governments, and the public
  • Monitors changes in federal, provincial, and municipal legislation and policy that would be of interest to the the organisation and reports to the Board on issues that may require advocacy or action
  • Champions initiatives and projects which will help the organisation achieve its objectives
Board Relations
  • Meets regularly with the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors
  • Cultivates a strong, supportive, and transparent relationship with the Board and reports to them on a timely basis regarding strategy, operations, financial performance, project effectiveness and all relevant matters needed to carry out their legal and fiduciary responsibilities to the association
  • Establishes and conducts regular evaluations of the nature, extent and quality of services and activities
  • Brings emerging issues forward to the Board for discussion and action
  • Works in partnership with the Board to develop policies and plans consistent with the organisation mandate and member expectations
Governance
  • Adheres to the policies, procedures, and governance guidelines of the organisation, ensuring that it is following all rules set by its By-Laws, as well as relevant legislation
  • Develops a plan for board and staff succession planning
  • Prepares all required documentation for Corporations Canada, including filing By-laws and articles of amendment
  • Provides orientation for Board members and committee chairs
  • Ensures that appropriate reporting and compliance systems are in place.
Financial Management
  • Prepares budgets for Board approval which accurately reflect the resources and needs of the association
  • Assures that the Board is provided with timely, accurate, and complete financial information relative to those budgets
  • Ensures sound accounting procedures and practices are in place and followed
  • Identifies and pursues all appropriate revenue sources and government grants
Stakeholder Engagement
  • Ensures the organisation has a comprehensive and effective government relations strategy that includes proactively maintaining senior-level contact with federal, provincial, and municipal government officials
  • Plans an annual conference
  • Meets regularly with individual agencies and organizations as a liaison, to gather information and resources as appropriate, and brings emerging issues to the Board.
  • Builds collaborative links with other organizations with relevant connection to the Policing and Community Safety sector, i.e., Academic, Research, Corporate community representatives
  • Represents the organisation at meetings with government officials to discuss the organisation’s initiatives, policy concerns/issues, and attends national stakeholders’ meetings/consultations on identified issues
Learning and Knowledge Platform
  • Plans and coordinates roundtables and summits as part of the development of a national centre of excellence
  • Develops strategies for enhancing member engagement and learning
  • Plans and develops webinars as part of the comprehensive knowledge plan
Public Relations and Communication
  • Oversees production of periodic newsletters and electronic sharing of information to members
  • In consultation with the President, determines the appropriate spokespersons on certain issues, produces and distributes news releases, and provides members with press releases for local use
  • Draws on resources available to ensure that up to date policing and community safety research information is available for dissemination
  • Develops and implements a strategy to maximize public awareness of the organisation and coordinates communications to members and stakeholders
  • Oversees management and content of the organisation’s website and social media

Working Conditions
Work is subject to deadlines and interruptions. Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a remote office environment. Occasional work-related travel is required within Canada. Must have enhanced security / criminal records check.
Required Education And Experience
Diploma or degree in business, education, public administration, or other related discipline; or a combination of post-secondary education with significant management experience
Minimum seven to ten years’ experience in increasingly senior leadership positions
Asset Qualifications
  • Registered in-house lobbyist experience is an asset
  • Experience working with political officials and senior managers
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English. Fluency in French is an asset.
  • Experience working in the police governance or policing field
  • A proven track record of success as an executive officer or director in an organization with a national profile
