Job Description

Executive Director – Maryvale

Maryvale is an accredited Youth Mental Health Centre that provides a continuum of high-quality mental health services to enrich the lives of youth and their families who are experiencing social, emotional and/or behavioural challenges. It is Maryvale’s passion and mission to improve the quality of life for youth and families experiencing mental health distress throughout Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent. Maryvale’s services are provided in an environment that is built on the values of respect, inclusion, collaboration, learning, innovation, and accountability.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, Maryvale’s Executive Director is responsible for the achievement of all strategic and operational goals of the agency. This includes the oversight and leadership of services, human and financial resources, identifying service needs within the agency’s mandate and community engagement.


People and Organizational Leadership

  • Direct senior staff in the development, implementation, evaluation, and reporting of results of programs.
  • Identify requirements and ensure compliance with all relevant legislation and regulations.
  • Advocate for continual learning and professional development while supporting team members and the agency through growth and development.
  • Ensure the effective delivery and reporting of all human resources related activities including recruitment, employee relations, talent and performance management, training and health and safety.
  • Empower, support, and inspire the Leadership Team to advance Maryvale’s mission and vision, and maintain a high-performing and accountable organization.
  • Promote a safe, healthy, and respectful organization that is committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion.


Building Relationships and Advocacy

  • Positively engage with all stakeholders including families served, community partners, the Ministry, school boards, the provincial child and adolescent mental health sector, agency staff, and donors to advance the mission and mandate of the organization and improve the delivery of services, quality, and operational efficiency.
  • Represent Maryvale with clients, individual citizens, community groups, special interest groups, related government funders, and media.
  • Facilitate the development and implementation of an ongoing proactive communication strategy within the organization and in the broader community to advocate and enhance the image and visibility of the organization.
  • Remain connected and current on the challenges and opportunities found in the sector across Ontario.
  • Participate in appropriate community collaborative initiatives, inter-agency planning, and activities designed to improve outcomes for youth and their families who are experiencing mental health challenges.


Strategic Planning and Innovation

  • Foster a culture that encourages innovation and appropriate risk-taking to develop and adopt innovative ideas and solutions. Be able to identify emerging issues and develop strategies to solve problems.
  • Reporting regularly to the Board about progress towards organizational objectives, the financial status of the organization, and any issues of concern for any short-range goals or long-range strategies.
  • Ensure program development and related operational policies and procedures meet legal obligations and the Board of Directors’ vision for the implementation, maintenance, and operation of Maryvale.
  • Develop a strategic plan, transformational goals, and operational management plans that build on and honour the established values, mission, vision and culture of Maryvale, in partnership with the Board of Directors.
  • Facilitate the growth and development of the organization by being a champion for change and innovation.


Administration, Financial Management, and Board Support

  • Manage the administration related to external tenants including booking space, rent collection, repair work, and safety compliance.
  • Provide reports to the Board on the progress of the organization in achieving stated outcomes and strategic priorities including planning, policy, quality, and financial stability.
  • Identify and secure major sources of revenue to meet operational requirements by identifying opportunities for partnerships and innovative approaches to secure alternative sources of funding.
  • In partnership with the Controller and the Board, monitor the financial stability and viability of the organization, identify any variances or issues, and ensure financial records are accurately maintained.
  • Oversee the development and preparation of annual budgets that reflect the accurate allocation of funds.
  • Inform the Board of local, provincial, and federal government policies, regulations, legislative changes, or initiatives that affect the organization and implement policies, procedures, and standards to minimize risk.
  • Maintain data on services and programs for evidence-based decision making and quality reporting to the Board.


Qualifications and Experience:

  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex, dynamic, and multi-disciplinary teams effectively.
  • A Master’s degree or Doctorate is preferred or a Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline with a combination of related work experience will be considered.
  • Knowledge of legislation, provincial policies and direction in relation to the provision of youth mental health services and the not-for-profit sector.
  • Demonstrated history of building and maintaining respectful and diverse relationships across all communities and promoting a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Strong sense of ethics and integrity that can lead the organization, with the ability to build commitment to a compelling vision.
  • Demonstrated leadership in strategic and operational planning, finance, risk mitigation, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • A minimum of 10 years of progressive senior management and supervisory experience in the child and youth mental health sector or experience in a similar clinical setting.
  • Experience working in partnership with various community partners, sectors, and levels of government locally and provincially.
  • Visible, empathetic, resourceful, and innovative leader that can communicate effectively with business leaders, government, the Board, employees, volunteers, users of the services provided, associations, the public, and media.
  • Strong financial and organizational acumen in the non-profit sector including change management, negotiating, business plan preparation and proposal writing, program evaluation, policy development, and fund development.
